Going to be doing a spray in bed liner - do I remove the bed rail caps?

Ordered a clear bed liner and a tan tint to compliment the blue (didn't want black soaking up summer heat)

I am wondering if it's best to pop off the bed rail caps and spray under them, or if that is going to cause issues getting them reinstalled.

Any input?

Lone Star Conversions where I have purchased most of the aftermarket parts for my truck from. They do the spray in bed liners and what they do is tape off the plastic bed caps and then cover the bedsides and the cab so the excess spray doesn't get on it. Only reason that I know that is that worked there for a little while before going to work at Tyson. Just my 2 cents.

That's also what my spray liner installer did.

Tanner, there’s likely to be enough build-up to make it a chore getting them back on - it often gums up the threaded tie-down locations to the point where the threads have to be chased with a tap.

I do have the tap for those threads already just in case, but I have eye hooks in all of them currently.

I'm more worried about the rail cap not fitting back on correctly

My installer used some sort of plug for all bolt holes. I didn't see, but asked. I imagine in a DIY situation, something could easily be used/substituted. Thinking maybe those push in fender "bolts" used on front fender wells.

Again, not really concerned with the threaded tie down points. But as it stands, I will plan on removing the caps and taping off the bed rails just past where the caps cover

I think you would have a hard time getting the caps back on. I had my bed, grill, fender emblems and rear emblem coated by Bullet Liner. In the end it is super thick, and all the tabs had to be masked off along with the backside of everything. Otherwise they would not have been able to fit back on.

That's the same liner I had the dealer spray on my truck and you're right, it's very thick. It's one of the nicest spray in liners I've had/seen in a while and well worth the money. I agree I wouldn't remove the bed rails and really see no need to as they don't when they spray them.

I would not remove them. It would be a lot of trimming and sanding to get them back on. Maybe I missed it, but I would recommend taking the eyes out of the tie down points. They will be very difficult if not impossible to take them off if they spray over them without damaging the areas near the tie down points.

When mine was sprayed they asked which holes I wanted saved. Then put in a bolt similar to a set screw to save the threads, and not damage the liner. Sprayed over the plugs, and those are now solid and part of the liner. There is no way to remove them without damaging the liner. After spraying I would also get a Rough Country (cheapest option and great quality) bed mat to protect your knees when you go into the bed.

I don’t have a spray in bed liner, but would think foam earplugs could go in the tie down holes if needed. Tape off the rail caps and I think you should be good.

I would be more worried about getting them off. I bought a new set to have painted body color. Then just swap out the OEM for the painted ones. The body shop broke most of the tabs getting the OEM ones off. They looked like put on once item never to be taken off unless you needed to replace them and assumed they would already be damaged so breaking them further would not mater.

Are they in fact "easy" or at least removal without damage??

This is the video I referenced in preparation to remove if I went that route. I wouldn't use a metal implement like he did but it seems doable. I (like an ass) got a rush oil change before a road trip at one of those Valvoline places and they broke every clip getting the fender liner off. Some wrench monkeys are just stupid

They’re “easy” if you do it the right way…



Sure, it’s a different truck but the principles are similar. Or, you could wreck your truck and do it like the guy in the video in the post above this one…

Tanner - I recall that @Canadian Ranger was looking at removing his and having them sprayed with bedliner I don’t know if he ever did but hopefully, he sees that he was mentioned and chimes in. If so, he’ll be able to speak to getting the rail caps off and if it was tough to get them back in.
