Front diff fluid type

What type gear oil goes in the front diff? I figure it's the same as the rear, 80w-90. Just like to verify. Owners manual didn't have it.

I have never found a replacement interval or type of gear oil specified. My assumption is Ford doesn't see it as a regular maintenance item.

I noted that too - For what its worth, Rockauto shows it the same. I actually used 75w-90 in the rear (I ran out of time to do the front). Planning to use the same in the front.

I found it in the front diff service manual section that someone posted on another thread. 80w-90 same as rear diff.

That is interesting - there are conflicting capacities:

I haven't looked yet, but I'm assuming I will need to remove the skid plate(s) before being able to change this fluid.

Front diff is 80/90 GL-5 1.06 qt
Rear diff is 80/90 GL-5 1.48 qt
Limited slip or locking diff would need a 80/90 gear oil that has a friction modifier

Why would a locking differential need friction modifier? There should be no clutch discs to chatter. My Torsen helical gear type limited slip differentials do not require friction modifier.

i was about to order some gear oil for my first diff fluid change. i was dead set on grabbing some amsoil 80w-90, but noticed it was flagged for having friction modifiers. i don't think that's really needed for my fx4's locking rear diff based on the above, but i also read on a different thread that amsoil isn't actually as good as the motorcraft (here, post #11 really kicks off the discussion: https://www.ranger5g.com/forum/threads/2019-ranger-rear-differential-failure.17021/ )

so now i'm torn. amsoil or motorcraft. or does it really not matter?

If anything I would recommend changing the Front and Rear Diff Fluid every 30,000 miles. Might seem a bit crazy, but this is the recommended interval for Severe Service through Nissan. I feel everyone should follow that schedule for the Axles, Transfer Case(if applicable) and Transmission. It will help keep the Failures to a minimum.

i'm not trying to get on your nerves, but why do you feel it's called scamoil? i'm trying to gain knowledge here. dismissive responses aren't really helpful.

The owner's manual calls for 80w-90 conventional gear oil, regardless if a locker or not.
The only synthetic I found that meets the Ford spec in the owner's manual is Redline 75w-90.
I changed both my axles with that at 30k and will do it again at 100k, which will be before this year is out.
FWIW, Redline D6 ATF meets the Ford spec for the transfer case fluid.
