how is this going?

Aside from being done? It's running exactly as I expected it to. Rpm's are in the right range, no more lugging in 10th, no more needing to downshift as low as 46mph. And tons more acceleration of the line.

I read through this thread (comic relief) out of curiosity, not that I'd want to do this myself.

Figuring out what parts to order depending on the ratios you want and the type of rear diff you have was not difficult, EXCEPT if you have an open rear diff and you want 4.27 gears to match the front. Was that an omission or are they not available?

Did you have Torrie retune the shift strategy?

I don't know. You'll have to search 4.27 for M220 diff and see. They might be listed for a different vehicle but they're the same.

Nothing needed to be done with the tune.

this is what I like to hear. No issues? I found a shop that’ll do it here, but I need to assemble the parts and I’m looking for any issues/etc before I pull the trigger.

Man, I love this thread. It’s such a shit show. I re-read the whole thing because I’m getting closer to gearing my Ranger.
Anyways, I reached out to Yukon gears and THEYVE RELEASED A FULL KIT FOR THE M190/M220 with 4.88 gears. It includes install kits.

now I am working to find a shop to do the install but parts are sorted. 4.88 will work with my 34” tires and when I jump to 35s.

I am glad someone is now selling an easy to buy kit. I am curious how much a shop charges you given it is nicely packaged into a single kit.

I’ll update when I know. The part listing says it fits the Ranger, which hasn’t been said by the manufacturer on any of the other front gearsets. This should make it so more shops are willing to tackle the job.

great news! I want some 4.88s and then find a better transfercase or some different gears to throw in there.

I have done a bunch of calculating and shopping with local shops to find an installer. I've settled on 4.46 because the shop that will install them is $600 cheaper than the shop that will install the 4.88. I also am only going to 35s, so I don't need the extra pep.

What are you going to spend on this total? Parts and labor to regear in prep for your 35s?

That's a great question and one I will be happy to answer once I get a solid answer. So far, I'm $3000-$3600. One place wants me to order the parts myself, which I am happy to do, and they will only charge me labor.

Those bigger tires must really be killing you

I know you are hitting the trails a lot too so I'm sure once you get up in the mountains you really feel it

Gears do a lot of things.

1. on road performance will increase
2. Fuel economy should jump up
3. you can go slower off road
4. it will help the effort required by the engine and transmission


I wheel a lot and... I'm big and heavy. Getting up the hills and off road control are big, big priorities for me. When I was young 'when in doubt, throttle out' was my motto. Now I'm old and I am much more 'low and slow'.

Also, $3000 is comparable to what the Toyota's are for gearing. The Dana FDU runs $6000-$8000. That is too much, no matter how cool it is.
