i thought Fords rust warranty was for perforation on panels only?
gonna take a fair bit for that to perforate.

That is body panels nothing about frame and cross members . No one is willing to buy a new truck with. A rusty bottom . It's a defect in there paint .

As others have said you are in an area in wich extreme environments take a toll on a lot of things including your vehicles.

In case you are not aware yoy are supposed to keep the undercarriage clean. How do you do that? Take it to the car wash or perhaps get the garden hose out and spay underneath. Sound silly to you? Well its the truth and if you dont do it then your truck and other vehicles with rust out on you. When should you do it. Preferably when there isnt a snow storm or heavy rain. Those are the times it becomes a bit pointless.

Hope this info helps out a bit.

After this post scared me I checked my frame and didn't see any rust other than what was bare metal. Maybe some are unlucky with rust.

Being a life line New Englander I can tell you this. Salt and now the chemical spray they use for snow and ice is like acid on our frames! Long ago a body guy told me about using naval jelly on rust areas after you wire brush off all the rust you can get you paint this stuff on. Let it sit for like 10 minutes and then wash it off. It’s a form of passivation (rust inhibitor) We use a pressure washer now to clean it when we do this. Back in WWII the treated battleships and then enamel painted. Today we use lineX or some other type of paint like it. Keep up with it touching up and your frame will thank you years from now!

I got my ride in December so this spring we will be pulling the bed off and going after the frame before the rust gets going.

Hi John,

Frames are thick enough to tolerated some superficial rust. I have no idea of what Dana sprayed on your frame, but we had different frame suppliers when I was at Ford and the paint was of modest quality... Re the Toyota frame rust through...Toyota blamed Dana...do not know the story, but frame paint is not the solution to rust through. I think Dana took the bullet for Toyota poor design.... We have an accelerated rust test at Ford where the vehicle, brand new is parked in a 100% humdity chamber and regularly sprayed with a saturated mixture of Sodium Chloride. Amazing what happens.... So your fame rust is of no real concern.

Tried to find a picutre of a rust prototype vehicle, but the Scotch is setting and I have to sign off....

Phil,
From my understanding it’s the type of steel along with the amount of impurities and how it’s made that became the real issue. From what I was told was when the flat stock was made the rolling process created lamination layers instead of solid sheet. The impurities were imbedded between each layer. Over time once the paint delaminated from rust underneath the steel structures broke down quickly and flaked away. Cheap import steel verses US mill steel.

Hi Rick,

I had not heard that before but it makes sense. I had similar experience with the Explorer intermediate shaft where it clamps to the steering gear. The clamp started popping and cracking. So there was immediate panic that our cash cow, the Explorer would be halted. Supplier went into panic mode too. We got certified stock on line within hours, but why and how many prior to the certified stock on line were there and how bad was it in the customer's hands. The why was determined to be a seam in the heat of steel purchased by the supplier from which they extruded round stock....this seam followed the extrusion process and when this stock with the seam in it reached the machining stage, it was pre cracked! I had never before experienced anything like that. Vehicle recall only included a few days of production and the customer did not loose steering control with cracked clamps.

I think more than one manufacturer found out the hard way about using inferior steel. Not only was it the catalyst for our own US mills mothballing it set the stage for the consumer getting the short end of the stick for major quality issues. Hard lessons learned by many in that regard. I’m not sure anymore what’s supposed to last longer now, the metal or the electronics. Sure miss the old carburetor and setting the points! ?

May sound funny to you but it's normal in Canada to wash the underside. Some carwashes have an under cartage spray when you drive in and the fancy ones have a long 90° hand wand with wheels just for the underside. Of vehicles.

Trucks are notorious for rust. When I bought mine I went to the auto parts store and purchased about 8 cans of rust proofing. About 45 minutes on a creeper and all is good for years to come.

Hopefully you didn't get the one time use. The oil base ones that you reapply every year are much more effective

There are paints that are specifically formulated for frames. It fills seam voids and where welds are. Goes on thick and is pretty much bullet proof for years to come. Mind you the stuff is pricey but for what it does nothing works better

It doesnt suprise me. We have the same thing here in ste states. It just a question if people use it or not because they can't afford an extra dollar

I had an 03 Sport Trac, up until the last year or so I used a por can and painted everything underneath it twice a year. Maybe $50 a pop in paint. When I traded it in with 103k on it the dealership couldn't believe how clean it looked.

This is what mine looks like. My 2nd winter with the truck. I plan to hit the welds with a wire brush and hit them with rust-oleum for cosmetic reasons.
