Hello everyone, maybe there is shudder fix on the horizon?

I experienced a shudder at 30km/hr like most folks on the forum by the sounds of it. It didn't really bother me as putting the truck in S instead of D helped the symptoms. I also had the clunk when stopping. I took it to a Ford dealership, asked them to re-grease the slip yolk (its under warranty so why would I do this). They took it for a test drive, told me they felt the shudder, and said they would like to try a TSB to correct it, they also said it may help with the clunk.

They performed the TSB Shim, it fixed the shudder for 1 day then returned and shuddered at 30, 50, 80km/hr. Again, driving in S seems to help. The truck still clunked with stopping.

Took it back, told them it was worse. They had it for a few days, they drove other non-tremor rangers around, and consulted with Ford. Their outcome was that it was present with the other fords on the lot, Ford said it was normal thus there is nothing more they could do. I told them to remove the TSB, and put it back to stock. They also stated that they were unable to grease the slip joint. They said that if they pull apart the drive shaft and re-grease, it will void the warranty on the driveshaft. Has anyone else been told that by the dealership??

They phoned back, the dealership said that Ford followed up and said that they want to put my truck on a trial... their new fix is to remove the tremor drive shaft and install a new flange and a drive shaft that has a Ujoint opposed to a CV joint.

I was confused what this would actually do, I had a meeting with the mechanic and the service manager at the dealership. they reassured me that if it doesn't help or fix the shudder it could be undone, re-shimmed to stock and have the Tremor drive shaft put back in. The service manager said that Ford may have changed the drive shaft since they called it a trial...

From what I read there are more benefits to a CV than Ujoint, any thoughts?

I am currently waiting for a phone call to have it the drive shaft swapped out. I will update with the results in later days.
Cheers,

For the time and money spent by the dealer, they would be farther ahead to install 1 piece shaft. But of course that won't happen. Then they'd(Ford) have to admit the failure in design of the 2 piece.

You sure you're not having EGR valve malfunction?

The "shudder" in "D" is kinda normal for all Rangers because the RPM's drop so low , Sport mode just downs it a gear and holds more RPMs , Some Tremor's have a CV issue also , you may have one and not the other or a little of both...

Cheers,
sorry you have to deal with this. ford dealers is what makes me never want to buy a new ford again. if it was normal why the tsb band aid. if its normal why drive others on the lot to verify it lol. its all a numbers game. if it eases the frustration any i had a nearly identical experience with the same issue. I ended up taking it to my own mechanic. had joint greased up, angle adjusted and replaced the center support bearing. didnt have the problem again for about 20k miles. .

i think someone on here said a one piece did help. cannot remember who. I have reservations on the one piece. mostly due to not feeling secure about them spinning quickly etc. for long periods. Phill S. explained it very well. Im not an engineer but his input made sense. I am not anti one piece. just dont think i want one in the 5g.

Haven't many reported resolving with the 1 piece shaft?
Not on Tremors. Because of the cv ( rezeppa ) joints. I believe someone with a Tremor damaged their driveshaft and replaced it with a one piece along with the pinion drive flange to do away with the cv joint style.

And did t they say they won't make the one piece for Tremors, or did I misunderstand?

Funny enough, my frustration isn't so much with this particular dealership. Believe it or not this current one has been great.

The first dealership I dealt with...
When I first recieved my truck there were many issues lol. The oil was over filled... The head mechanic checked it infront of me, it was clearly over the fill hole. He looked at me and said it was normal! I had a bent boot on one of the Ford Fox shocks (careless tie down during transport?)... One of the service fellows looked at it and told me it was supposed to look like that. Had them put under coating on, missed the rear panels completely, took it back, they didn't do anything. Third time they finally sprayed it. Bought the 3M package... they "forgot" to put half of the 3M on the truck they missed the plastic bumper! Bought new rims/tires that were take offs in the summer. Same dealership told me I had to have tires mounted to program the TPM's in new Rims/Tires. They then questioned me why I was putting winter tires on in the summer. I could have picked the tires up right away instead of making an appointment 3weeks in advance to have them "mount to calibrate TPMs". And just recently, I found out that same dealership cross threaded a tie down bolt after they sprayed Linex in the box.?‍?

This current dealership I am going to has been alot better to work with. The Mechanic actually test drove the truck with me on the fly the second time I brought it back and listened to my concerns. I didn't even tell them I was coming in that day. They get my truck in for service the next day to take a peek. Staff are awesome to work with.

Chatting with folks at this dealership Ive learned that fixes have to be filtered through Ford, it's not simply up to the Ford dealership. Yea I've had troubles before, but this is a different beast. I'm told their hands are a bit tied regarding on what Ford actually allow them to do. I guess that is the warranty at work! Ford says let's give him a new drive shaft instead of regreasing the old one and shimming it differently... Err lol ok let's see what it does!

9zero1790, by any chance do you know what angle your mechanic had set your drive shaft to? When they shimmed mine they said it was at 3.8, changed it to 4.5. I had read on the forum that one owner had success at 4.2 with no more shuddering. Is different with each individual truck?

i know ford states a range that is considered in spec. however, the amount of adjustment for each truck will be unique. my truck is one that came from the factory about half an inch out of square and came with shims on one side of the rear axle. mine took shims for the center support bearing and on both sides of the axle in the end to be "fixed". it is a shim and test type of situation. i gave up on one shop after realizing they were in up to the ears. took the next shop about 3 rounds of adjusting and driving to see how it felt. I dont know how much it took but next time im under the struck i can snap a picture for you.

Thanks a ton for the offer, it sounds like you have done alot of digging into this! All good/No worries on the pics (although very much appreciated) since they are all abit different. I wonder what the tolerances are for the trucks to be out of square. I had my truck on level ground and measured different angles from the drivers side of the frame to the passengers side with a angle finder. (Unless I misunderstood the directions, I found it interesting that the TSB shows to take the angle on only 1 side of the truck to get the right degree for the drive shaft). I believe the difference on my truck was 1 degree. Measured other rangers on the Ford dealerships lot, same findings, some were alot worse than others.
