This is the way the entire industry is going. I work in heavy trucks and equipment. Most makes provide 2 years free Sat Com. After that you pay if you want it. Semi & Equipment manufactures can do over the air programming updates so the units don’t have to get taken to the dealer. That doesn’t work either after the base 2 years if not renewed by the owner $$$.

My buddy has about 10 trucks for his businesses. Half for his moving business an half for his freight/flatbed service. He tries to buy low mileage used trucks pre DEF systems. I don't think he can go into California without it so he has 2 newer trucks for those runs.

I'm thinking of buying an older Jeep TJ an swapping a 3 liter Mercedes diesel into it. I've read the 80's Benz diesels were mechanical with no real electronics to mess with. No tech in those jeeps

I remember when everyone hated cable companies because they were ripping them off. Everyone wanted to get rid of cable. Now every channel is going to be an app with a fee. Pretty soon when everyone figures out how much their 12 streaming services cost they'll be going back to cable.
Peacock is definitely worth $5.00 a month for no commercials unless it's a football game or the news. Paramount + was good for 1883 and Mayor of Kingstown, and now it's done. I switch all of the streaming apps up every month or two. I cut cable and commercials out of my life 8 years ago.

No way will I ever subscribe to a nav service when free options exist. I'll change the entire head unit if I need to.

Not sure what you mean. You asked for simple feature. I've informed you that it's available. Has been for half a decade. I think Waze might do the same, although they are owned by Google, if you don't like Google maps for some reason.
Right now Waze on AA is trash, stops working mid drive all the time. I'm a Waze editor and I've stopped using it on long drives because I need something that works. Been using Google Maps for long drives. If I'm driving local area, <10 miles, I'll switch back to Waze but even then it will sometimes just crash until it stops working. I'm on a Pixel 4 XL on Google Fi service. I've reported to Waze developers for over a year that this issue exists. I could reproduce it anytime I wanted by forcing the phone to switch between T-Mobile, Sprint or US Cellular.

Sync 3 doesn't really work in my book. My 21' Ranger has had a gremlin since new... and a new head unit has done nothing to correct the issues. No codes to work with either. Problems: GPS will at random times acts drunk and shows the vehicle in places it can't be, wandering all over the place off track some where over there, near by. The audio system constantly looses the USB as the audio source. Can not connect the system to my home WiFi... it says Passcode is not accepted after spinning for a while. Have a mesh node very close by with a strong signal available. The only work around I finally discovered was to set up a Guest Account with no Passcode; bad idea despite being remote. Just junk, so I wouldn't pay either. Garmin is a better GPS system anyway, but not built in... What an opportunity for a good after market head to be developed?

Damn that sucks.

I tried Waze for about a week at work. Couldn't get over the display.

Unnoticed to the public the car manufactures are putting trackers in the electronics of your vehicles. The secure? data will not be used against you at this time. LOL
Sorta like gun registration but there is no amendment to protect your vehicle rights. ?
Unnoticed? Every time I get in my truck without my phone, I get a message on the SYNC3 that says something like 'Location Services Active'

I swear-to-God if cars get any more complicated I'm just going to buy a 1970 CJ-5, drop a carbed 302 Ford in it, and be done. At least I'll still be able to drive after China or the Rooskies hit us with an EMP blast.
You could buy and install an old small diesel and make your own biodiesel with the fry grease from McD's.
