We've seen what magic Ford can do with the small capacity in-line 4's spread throughout their current lineup. With horsepower, efficiency and just fun to drive, we all (most of us anyway) love the 2.3L commonly found in our Rangers. Not so much the transmission, maybe, but that's another story.

So browsing the web I found a video regarding Ford's original truck, the Model TT. It had a 10 year run from 1917 to 1927 with, get this, a 2.9L 4 cylinder in-line engine making 20 HP. What goes around comes around, and here we are back to the same layout, just a wee bit upgraded. Who would have figured?

I see they have the same “water-in-number-four-spark plug well” design that is still in use today.

Except that the hood/cowl didn't leak allowing water onto the top of the engine. The cooling vents were located in the side panels. Henry knew how to build a Modet T.

I bet that has a couple of horsepower,
That ought to increase tow capacity!

Probably need to add Toyota bump stops to deal with it!

And it'll be capybara-sized rodents for that thing! Better start looking for an appropriate engine cover.

The pic of the generator on the truck brought back 50 year old memories of my time stationed at NORAD CMC.

Here is a picture of the Power Station in NORAD CMC - 1 mile inside Cheyenne Mountain - 2500' underground. I spent 3 years there in the late 1970's. The complex runs on 2 of those generators, 2 are in standby, and 2 are being rebuilt. The green lines are diesel fuel lines. The blue are the exhaust. There are cranes mounted above used to place units and perform maintenance.

There is a sign at "Welcome to the Enterprise". It is a very impressive facility. The three minute video gives a taste of what it is like to be in the complex. There is another massive cave with cooling towers installed. A very impressive piece of engineering.

The video shows the first blast door. There is a second door 100' after the first door - redundancy.

We were instructed if an alert was sounded that we had 27 minutes once a Russian ICBM was launched before impact. If you were caught in the tunnel when detonation occurred, you would be sucked out from the blast vacuum and vaporized. We all knew that once the alert was sounded those doors closed immediately, and there was no need to even attempt to reach the facility.

I am sure that timeline is dramatically shorter today.

In typical military fashion, the engines were so clean you could eat off of them.

I have a Ford 8N 1941 Farm Tractor that still runs good, so maybe there is a small chance of getting 80+ years out of my Ranger? (it hasnt had an oil change in many years either LOL) and the Tranny is still good!
LOL Probably not...

Great machines!
I had one refurbished from the ground up as a present to my father. Had it converted to 12v, and repainted. He loved it. All 20 hp! I still have the manuals for it. They are great machines!
