For those who bought their first pickup, how many 'friends' asked to use it?

No one has asked me to use it out here. But when I was living back east me and all my friends had this rule. You can use anything of mine but if you break it you fix it and if you total it you own it. One of my friends borrowed another motorcycle helmet and it slipped out of his hand and hit the ground putting a big scratch it in. He just looked at him and asked "how much". That's the way it should be!
Myself and my friends are like this too. Anyone who's a real friend is like that.

Just had to buy my buddy a new 5x8 utility trailer cause I folded his up with some one ton truck axles.

His fault kinda lol. He didn't have a tounge jack on the trailer, so I needed to use my floor jack to take the trailer off my truck when I got home.

Parked in my nice level driveway.. as soon as the tounge came up off the ball the trailer fell off my jack and the very front of the tounge fell 2 feet straight to the ground. Bent the tounge UP 15° or so.. bent one corner of the trailer DOWN 15° or so...

Added 1100 bucks to the cost of my axles. At least I got a real good deal on them ? brightside is that once I get it straightened out and braced up it'll be a good upgrade over my previous trailer lol

Like Dave living in NE has it unsaid rules. You borrow and break you fix it, total it you own it and if you bring it back like you got it better have a full tank of high test for the favor. That is if you want to remain my friend! My old Ranger was lent out all the time. Seems this one everyone is hesitant to ask. It must be the “look” I give them when approaching. I know that shuffle anywhere now…

This exactly. I'll loan almost anything to many of my friends or family who understand this concept. Take care of it as you would your own things, and fix/replace it if things go bad. I loaned my Ranger to my friend for an off-road camping trip, 4 months after I got it. He broke his transfer case and needed 4x4, so I gave him the Ranger and I took his Rubicon for a few days.

And at least your buddy has a nice, brand new 5x8 you can use in a pinch...

I must be one of the few that doesn’t mind it. Only one freind has asked to borrow it twice. Once he forgot to fill it up and he bought me beers. Next time he filled the tank and we were good.

This is my first truck. I never realized how often I would get politely and sometimes not so politely asked to help out. The one that was the worst was helping my Mom and her husband out with a garage door they bought at Home Depot. I mentioned this back then but we had the boxed door on one of those orange flat top metal carts. The cart slid under the tailgate when loading and it turns out those carts are just the right height to catch the raised edge on the tailgate. It scratched the paint down to the metal and I'd only had my truck a few months by then. :frown:

Since then a lot more helping out my Mom as they are doing some renovations. Hauling away old toilets, cabinets etc. That I don't mind because I like being able to help them out. The ones that bother me are when I get a call Saturday morning from someone that goes something like this:

Person: "Hey Mark how are you? Have not talked to you in awhile."

Me: "Good thanks. Good to hear from you. What's new?"

Person: "Not much. But hey can you help me out a bit. I need to move some things. So I was hoping you could bring your truck."

Me: Sigh.., thinking I have not talked to this person in at least a month. "What is it and when?"

Person: "Not a lot. Just a sofa, a 300 Lb safe, 100 landscape blocks, 10 bags of Quikrete, an armoire, lawn mower, 3 treadmills, a refrigerator, an oak desk and a granite coffee table. So I'm guessing it will take like 2 trips maximum? But I'd like to do it before noon."

Me: Sigh... Texts the person the link to the Ranger 5g Friday night drunk thread. "Call someone else."

I might have embellished a bit here on the last part. :p

I taught all of my family, friends, and neighbors way back in 1997. I had a '86 F-150 with a ton of miles, and everyone knew they could use it. Just fill the tank when finished. It was time for a new truck, and I offered everyone that had used the old truck a chance to buy it. I told them no one gets the new truck. Well no one bought the '86. Two weeks later my neighbor wanted to borrow the new truck. I made he repeat what I told him when he didn't want the old one. :)

I had an F250 years ago when living in north Wa after moving there from SoCal. I was renting a room from my sister and would work with my brother-in-law leaving my truck at home with keys in it.
The first time we got home and my truck was gone I freaked out. My brother-in-law said don’t worry someone just borrowed it.

later it showed up with a full tank of gas. It happened a few other times and I never found out who borrowed it.

Owning a truck is like having a pond , a tractor , a trailer or a hot wife . Dudes come out of the woodwork wanting to use it .
so about the pond... you got any dinner sized crappie in it?

I stocked it back in early 2017 with blue gill , red ear and a few bass. The blue gill are huge and I let a young couple practice bass fishing in it last week and this was their 1st couple of cast . The girl had never fished before and later in the day a bigger bass snapped her rod just as it came off the hook.

I have had a pickup since the mid 70`s. I used it to haul things for the house & yard plus
my dirt & street bikes. loaned most of the trucks out over the years. then a "friend " used it
& broke the rear window hauling a acetylene unit. (85 Ranger) he gave me money to get a new window
but the hassle involved getting it replaced ticked me off.
didnt loan my trucks to anyone but my kids after that. the oldest daughter broke a tail light on my 04 Ranger when using it but went & had it replaced that same day.
no more loaning the truck as the repairs are to expensive besides the back ordered parts issues.
