Okay.. here are the results of my factory installed keypad that failed.
#1 dealership couldn't find a wiring diagram so they kept dragging their feet for me to bring it in to fix.
#2 I carefully removed it from the paint.
#3 It is in fact, a stick on device
#4 volt meter found a dead battery.
#5 replaced battery and restored functionality.
#6 Easy process, and did not hurt the paint- i removed during full sunlight (heat).
#7 used 2 inches of Scotch double sided tape to reaffix.

Thanks for replying. This bums me out. I was hoping I could pull a sneaky one and replace the big ugly black keypad with one from a Fusion, found on eBay. I may have to consider relocating mine.

If you find a good out of the way place, I will be interested in knowing where. On my old truck I had a hide a key hidden in case I lost my keys while hiking (which happened once). With the fob, that won't really work, so leaving the fob in the truck and using the keypad to open it sounds like a good option - I just don't want it to be visible.

Same here. I pulled and replaced mine (with dental floss) like you did and a few days later it was dead. Volt tested the battery and it was 0. Put in a second fresh one at 4V and after a few days it was dead too. Must be an open circuit in the circuit board draining the battery since the keypad has gone through the factory battery and two more. Frustrated I have to now go through the warranty process at the dealership, waste of a day.

However I was able to relocate it to inside on the gas door. Fits perfect and works great (while battery was not dead). I posted the pics on another thread.

Hmmm....mine went out Monday. Dealer ordering another. How long will the new one last? Replace keypad every month? I think not....Ford will have to rectify the situation.

Used mine 6 times over 30 days...died last night while I was at work...major inconvenience. Had to arrange ride home, then hire Lyft to get to the truck this morning. Extra keyfob worked great and I'm driving again but this is a major fail on the part of Ford. I ordered this feature specifically for surf and/or bicycling trips that make carrying a keyfob impossible or sketchy at best. Refund or re-engineer...ASAP

If you have Ford Pass App, you can open the doors from your phone. Required you to have syn'd the phone prior to locking keys in, but great backup.

Hmmm - do you know if you have to have cell service for this to work? I was thinking about doing a hitch safe, but if I could unlock the truck with my phone, that might do the trick - the problem is I almost never have cell service at trailheads where I would be using it.

I believe you do need cell service. I have been in spotty areas where it took a bit (almost a minute) to unlock, but there has always been at least 1 bar on my phone (which was next to truck).

Ironically, I added the keyless pad as a backup in case my phone didn't have signal. Since my truck didn't come with it, and I had to wait a few months for it to be available, I got used to using the phone app. My concern was if I lose my phone, but signal is a good point too. A plus is that I find I remote start the car with the phone more often, given it's been 100 degrees here lately, the phone gives more range for me than the key fob anyway.

I may try it next time I'm out. I was kind of hoping it could use bluetooth connectivity. Maybe a hitch safe is a good fathers day present.....

I also have been thinking about a hitch safe. Was all ready to purchase one, then decided to wait. Anyone of the forum actually have one?

I used to have them on about 50 fleet vehicles in the oilpatch. My guys would be working in regions and then fly out to go home for days off and then fly back and get their keys out of the hitch safe.
