TechnicallyReal, thanks for the follow up. It does seem to be temperature related, but in my case it seems to be more quiet as the engine warms up and on warmer days. I’m still hoping the noise decreases as miles accumulate. I certainly hope so, or I’ll probably do like Bdubb says and dump it for something else and lose a bunch of money in the process!

I still need to submit my survey to Ford. At this point, I love everything about the truck except the way it sounds, and if this is permanent, it will cause me to “definitely not recommend” the truck to others.

Lots of comments about it here (including some by me). Scroll through these pages.
UPDATE: A good friend who is a former excellent ford technician and later owned his own very successful shop (now retired) said to try “BG brand ATC“ an automatic transmission, pour in additive. He said the BG products actually work. (I’m a teacher, I don’t sell any kind of product and neither does my friend). He uses them on his own vehicles and I’m going to give it a try. $25 on Amazon. I’ll report back on the results.

Any update here by chance?

The engine "cover" is definitely worth it. Just got mine and popped it on, I'd say conservatively it makes at least 50% difference. I went from pretty darn aggravated to not so darn aggravated. It certainly makes a difference but of course still sounds like a DI turbo 4 banger. Definitely doesn't sound like a truck.

I think if I put a nice bolt on on, I'll be entirely pleased after really sweating out a week of that god darn engine electronic clickity clack.

I really want to talk to the pencil pusher who decided not to include these "covers" on all trim levels. They cost three or four bucks to make I'm sure, of course they were banking on many buying them after purchase, but how many "cover" sales are worth people getting infuriated listening to that engine? It absolutely boggles the mind.

And a big thank you to all those more qualified than I am who have weighed in previously.

Hi B,

Okay...the so called pencil pusher at the top is the head of Ford Vehicle Engineering. He and the bean counters look at the need for the engine cover and the cost/benefit. In my opinion they guessed wrong with respect of the engine noise intrusion into the passenger compartment, but they were likely worried about their bonus in order to meet their cost objectives.

Glad you verified what I suspected was that this engine cover is very effective from an noise standpoint. Glad I went top of the line Lariat for that reason.

In my early days learning NVH, I was amazed how effective a Hood Blanket was in minimizing engine noise. The amount of noise from the engine radiated into the cab is amazing. So a hood blanket and an engine cover is very effective in my opinion

The Lariat engine cover definitely helped quiet mine down as well, but the noise is always there. It's louder when the engine is cold, and not as obvious once it's warmed up, but the fact that every other aspect of the truck is quiet and refined makes the noise really stand out. I'm trying to think of where any additional sound deadening could be installed, but they already covered pretty much everything, including the underside of the hood and both sides of the firewall. It looks like a good attempt was made to isolate the cabin from the engine noise, but maybe there's only so much you can do.

im going to be making and selling custom fit lead helmets for all the sensitive people out there.

for those with weak backbones who cant take the weight, i will be making earplugs and earmuffs.

the benefit of this is that I suspect the overall cost to the consumer will be $20. and if you want custom graphics i can add them for a few $$ considering what exactly you want.

i considered making lead covers for the injector pump, but i cant gloss up the lead for long and it just oxides into the dull grey finish and it's not appealing.
the Ford Ranger crowd is filled with a variety of owners, from manly men who shun the damper to prima donnas who want to listen to their classical music while puttering down the freeway and want nothing to get in the way of their acoustic organasms....
A little turd polish will make it shine like a mirrror.

have u been able to fix it
Honestly you get over it. 1 year anniversary of owning mine. Bought it with 150 miles. Buzz showed up around 250 miles. I’ve got 8000 now. It’s just part of life.

It still bugs me from time to time. But the truck runs great. No problems otherwise. I still love it.

it drives me nuts i still love the truck but id love it more without this noise,
feel a lot better knowing its common with these trucks and not a problem with the motor or anything serious, i hope lol

I installed the Lariat engine cover and it does take the edge off the ticking sound.

While shopping for it I found some reviewers who complained about the foam material it's made of, apparently disapointed it isn't carved from Ti billet or something else appropriately manly. It's sound attentuating foam, dummies!

I had a Xtreme-DI HPFP laying on the bench, and for the heck of it. I tried installing it. I can't run it without a tune, but the buzzing immediately disappeared. I'm sure we agree the buzzing is coming from the pump at this point.

A tune like the Ford Performance one, or something more aggressive?
