Think of it as the anti-cat procedure. The fan runs good and strong at first to kick out any furry debris that might be caught up in there.
Considering my security camera catches two different neighborhood cats wandering around and under my truck all hours, let hope your theory is sound lol

yeah it quiets down after a minute or two. I fixed the noise by selling my Ranger and buying a GMC with a V8 that just makes a valve lifter ticking noise on startup. It's always something...

Even my '99 B4000 did that. It takes a little time for the viscous fan clutch to get 'primed up'.

Has anybody ever come up with a fix for the dreaded Ranger noisy engine fan? I read somewhere that the engine cover on the Lariat can cover it up, But I don't want to cover it I want to fix it.
I found installing tailgate dampers fixed it. :like:

My Ranger warm-up consists of slowly driving through the neighborhood turning heads as the clutch fan roars like a wild banshee after a drunken Friday night binge.
...closely followed by a swarm of angry hornets (HPFP)

No different than having to listen to your electric cooling fan run after you shut off the vehicle. I am sure that the 6G world will be whining about that if and when they ever get their trucks

Can confirm that the MHU (Mouse Habitat Upgrade), or engine cover, does pretty much nothing for any engine noise. It's pretty small and lays flat above the engine with an inch or two of space to focus the sound out to the sides.

Now in my '22, I was missing the side weatherstripping and would suggest adding that along with the engine cover (if this was "decontented" from your '20). I can't really say that side weatherstripping makes any diff to the sound, but I'd think that has a greater effect than the cover (lol, one decibel decrease?).

Plus the weatherstripping is a whole lot cheaper than that cover! Side note, mine was also missing the hood bumpers and I added those at the same time and they were inexpensive.

Only sure fire thing I've found is to crank up the radio! =D

It's' not as noticeable outside the truck as you may think, unless you're running in 1st at redline. Your neighbor's vehicles make the same noise with their electric fans when they have the AC on.

Friday yet?

missing the hood bumpers
Good catch! Mine are missing too. Ordering them right now!

Edit: On the other hand,, maybe not. Can get two of them for less than $12. But everywhere I check wants another $10-$12 in shipping. I refuse on principle. Put the damn things in a padded envelope and mail it. Probably $4-5 total.

I hear ya, but you have the cost of the envelope and the part time retiree or high school kid to pull the parts and get them packaged, sealed, labeled, and to the mail room. Hence the practice of "Free Shipping!!" on your now $19.99 bumpers.
