DIY: Adding the 12V Power Outlet Option in the Bed

So, here's what I've been up to...

With the help of my brother, we've been working on a 3D printed insert for that hole that will allow you to use a standard 12MM "Anti Vandal" switch without having to deal with anything "behind" the wall of the bed. (E.g. APIELE (Pcs of 2) 12mm Latching Push Button Switch High Round Head Stainless Steel 1 Normally Open with Ring Led (Blue): Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific )

On that note, the 16MM switches MAY fit if you don't have any spray in bedliner, and even then you might need to slightly enlarge the hole. The 12mm is way too small, when used by itself.

That’d be nice if it just presses in too, eliminating the nonsense with reaching up to thread the nut on.

That's the whole idea. You can just pre-wire the switch with a pigtail, put it in the hole and it locks in place from the front. Removing it is a little bit of a issue, as you have to basically break the plastic part, but I don't see that as a negative, as they can be made cheaply and be disposable in exchange for convenience.

I know I’m just a lurker for now, but I’m certainly in for one if you work it out. I just purchased a outlet a couple of hours ago. (Stupidly without the code since I don’t Tweet, but oh well.)

Is there a part/ part no. for just the pigtail harness? I have my own 12V cigarette/ USB power outlet and prefer not to splice the existing Ranger wires if I can just get the connector.

I haven't removed it yet but there is a tab you need to press with your thumb. Don't force it!

You may need to spray some water to clean off grime that can get between the housing/connector body. You can also grab the end of the dummy plug with pliers and pull straight out WHILE pressing in the tab. The first time I removed mine it had some crud making it more difficult.

I'm having a rough time getting the dummy clip off. Exactly which way do I push, and do I use a small flat screwdriver pushing inside one of the groves, or what. I cannot seem to get mine off. Also interesting is my dummy plug looks different, but I don't think that matters (I have a 2021) other than perhaps making it harder to grip.

Thanks WLFPIR8 and Ranger_Rocks. I won't be able o try again for a week or so, heading out of town tomorrow morning. When I get it out, I'll send/post a bunch of pics of the dummy.

I've removed a bunch of these harnesses on various vehicles. Sometimes they are a PITA until you have released that exact one before. Reaching up under the bedside doesn't make it easier
