But you forget to mention rising interest rates. They've doubled in a short time.
My point was the salesmen don't have to chase every lead since they can easily sell every new car to people just walking in thanks to the short supply. I run parts part time for a Ford dealership an they have maybe 40-50 new cars an trucks on the lot. Mostly escapes and eco sports an a few f150's an they've been advertising 3.9% financing on them to off set the higher rates.

So being old and crusty, I've lowered my expectations for most things post-pandemic. As someone that can easily afford a Ranger, I have a dealer that just doesn't feel I'm worthy enough for them to bother with me and simply doesn't respond back when I've inquired about several vehicles. Sure, I know the typical response: "so what, move on and find another dealer". I agree with this sentiment and have no problem doing so, but maybe someone can help me understand the utter lack of any courtesy whatsoever. Mind you, I've already been the dealer twice and have test rode some vehicles. Two different salesmen won't respond to me. Odd or am I just old?
Same thing happened to me at a local dealership when I was in my early twenties. They were very rude. Asked me if I even had a job and took my car on a test drive and didn’t return for about 45 minutes. To them, I was just a dumb, young, female who wasn’t worth their time. And yes, I had a good, well-paying job. They couldn’t care less.:(

I don't think dealers would care?
They don't because I've done this very thing 2 times to my local dealer. Even told them the vehicle, found it and they wouldn't go get it. They could care less if you buy from them. I guess there not hungry enough.

To the op you're correct service sucks, and it seems like everywhere people are so rude. I had a guy chase me,, try to run me off the road, then fight me because I merged behind him then passed him using the left lane on the interstate. He kept claiming I cut him off when I got on the interstate? I finally told him I didn't feel like dealing with him and to have a nice day sir as I drove away. People just suck anymore lol

I just find it odd that a dealer doesn't want my money.
Back in 2018 when I was preparing to order my Ranger I was surprised at how many dealerships had no interest in ordering a vehicle for me. I thought it was easy and a guaranteed sale, even though it was out in the future. Seemed really weird to me.

Welp, you've told us a story but left out all the details.

I am "old" and from "SoCal" like you, and one thing that I have learned from owning two Ford vehicles (Explorer, 2014-2019, Ranger, 2019-Present) is that there is a vast difference between Ford dealerships, pandemics or no pandemic. I do not know how Ford organizes and supervises its dealers, but, obviously, much is left to local dealer discretion. (As to why your particular dealer is so clueless as to allow its sales advisors to ignore potential customers, let us just say that some people are better at running a business than others.) Anyway, if one place does not treat you right, just move on until you find a good one (yes, they are out there), and then stick with it! Happy Trails!

Probably see you as wasting their time by now . Most people know what they want when they walk in due to all the info available on the internet .

You can thank me later. If I feel ignored, Iā€˜ll just plop my fat ass down on a suitable piece of furniture in a prominent location and begin talking loudly.

In no time, I’m treated like the royal highness I am. Yes Sir, No Sir, How do you like your coffee? Can we gift wrap your purchase at no charge?

You must take a different approach. Assertiveness works.

Your post reminds of a true story that happened a long time ago about neglecting a customer. A friend of mine was a sales rep. at the biggest Chevy dealer here in the city. One day a farmer in overalls dressed like he had just been out in the fields came into the showroom. Everyone evaded him because he didn't appear to have the means to afford anything. My friend Joe approached him and introduced himself. The farmer bought 2 brand new vehicles that day pulling a wad of cash out of his pocket to pay for them! "Never judge a book by its cover" :)

I remember going in when I first heard about them as well. The "truck" specialist salesman didn't know jack about a Ranger coming. Then told me they might have a used one if I was still interested. I clearly told him 2019 NEW Ranger. I just wanted to see what they had or knew at the dealership. Useless. This is why I only deal with one dude. I also think the Maverick has stolen some of the limelight from the Ranger. So they still push the F150's and the Maverick.

Buying my Ranger was a circus and traveling farther out than what I wanted since there is a large selection of Ford Dealerships in this city and surrounding area. Well I went to one which on internet says they have several in stock, only to see no real new vehicles on the lot except a few new F-150s, some SCab Rangers that were more for the fleet side and used Rangers costing more than new Rangers which I didn't want to buy used really didn't think it would be worth my effort to talk to them because there wasn't anything on the lot new to work with.

So the second dealer which is a large name Dealer I went to after work later in the week. Came in said I'm looking to trade my Grand Cherokee for something bigger and the salesman immediately thinks I want an Expedition, I said no a truck IE I want a Ranger. He couldn't understand what I mean until I said the box, 5 ft of cargo space you know ''bigger." Said I didn't want to spend more than about $38K and I was looking at an STX Special Edition as long as it had Satellite Radio I was fine navigation a bonus. He shows me a $45K Lariat and I was like yeah its nice but not anywhere near my budget. So he takes me around back I drive an XLT which was sitting at my budget now the fun begins. It's great but want a blue Ranger, they have one coming in an XLT Sport. Okay I'll take it, and it goes off the rails. First off the Finance guy decides he needs to leave because he has important things to do. Okay yeah end of the damn day I showed up after 5pm. Second they want a co-signer no kidding my wife. By the third day, the finance guy wanted me off the sale and instead have my wife sign with a co-signer herself. My wife already has a brand new vehicle courtesy of her job great perk okay and she got livid that yeah they were kicking me off the sale. We walked away from that, obviously when you have more important things than going to bat for the customer well yup not gonna get many customers that way.

I go on Vacation, and we decide to go up to the next big dealer in town, nothing on the lot except a couple of used Rangers and Colorados. I showed them off to my Wife so she could get an understanding up close of what, she was wanting more than I did at this point. We go in and get a salesman, who basically throws up a build sheet and says that you put down the deposit and we wheel and deal when it comes in. Yeah... seeing how wait times are often longer than 3 months and I knew that there was no 3 month guarantee and I wasn't waiting while my Grand Cherokee depreciated more and more. Salesman really perked up when I said I had a Grand Cherokee to trade, now it went from buying a Ranger and trading in my Grand Cherokee to a repeated ''Can you sell it today''. No I can not sell it, yes my wife had her old car which needed work done to it and I had neither the time or upfront money to fix it and no I'm not going to sell what I still owe in the red slightly for either. Well that was it we walked out.

I told her we were halfway to Ames, there was a Red STX Special Edition in the budget it came in just before I went on vacation but I really wasn't exactly in the mood to drive that far. She said lets go might as well because this Ranger was Red and I wanted a Blue Ranger as did my 3 year old Daughter. So we get there, convince my 3 year old Daughter to let us buy it. We walk in and immediately over the announcement they call for a salesman for us. Told him we were wanting to purchase the Ranger, he was fine with it and immediately said they're a non-commission based dealership, I had worked with one before in the past and had a great experience with them. I said I already test drove one but my wife wants to try it out. So I took it for another drive with her in the back seat because on road trips its where she tends to be some of the time with our Daughter. She said the back seat was fine, I was right plenty of room for what we needed. We fill out credit apps, decide what were gonna put for the down payment and the best part was we get approved with Ford Credit directly. The salesman and finance guy all around great to work with, he went to bat for us to get the Ranger. Funny part when I mentioned the first Dealership where I went and test drove, the finance guy said, that dealership keeps them in business.

It used to be when you drove onto a dealer lot and got out to check out vehicles, it wouldn't take a full minute before a salesperson approached you. That, to me, is annoying. I have to say, I actually enjoyed my last purchase experience (the Ranger back in March). I searched the whole metro area from my couch. I also was able to let time pass to get a feel for how fast (or not) inventory was moving. By the time I was ready to buy, there really wasn't much to talk about.

A solid approach.

The Ford dealers around here will literally mob everyone coming onto their lots. Not so 10-15 years ago. Really doesn’t matter to me unless the salesperson is an azz.

Then, we will have a heartfelt conversation at a high volume level in a very public place.

Now, that my addled mind has blown out a few cobwebs, I’ve only had ā€˜spirited’ conversations with rude/incompetent parts and service people.

I’ve had to resort to using voice recorders as evidence. I learned this long ago when the ā€˜diversity-inclusion-equity malfunctionā€˜ began permeating my workplaces-made for a number of short employment tenures.?

Disingenuousness/credibility vacuum is a nasty disease.
