So I have been looking at Dash cams lately.going on a road trip in Oct and want to have the cam in and used some before I go. Last thread about what is being used is almost a year old so thought I would start a new one to get an updated feel for what people are using and the Pros and Cons. there are a ton of them online and a ton of reviews but none of the reviews really agree with each other. So. what'cha got and pros and cons please

I like the rear view mirror type because it improves your back and side visibility. Records front and rear, and will record when parked if senses a shock.

Could you elaborate on how this is wired up? I have a truck topper which makes the normal mirror pretty useless so I would love to get something like this.

Dash cams have come a long way. There are so many options out there. I think it may be helpful if you tell us a little more of what you need/want/want to avoid.
Do you need to record when parked? Rear camera that records behind the vehicle, or the inside of the cabin? Do you want one that will send alerts to your phone? What is the environment - prolonged heat/cold?

I've tried 3 different dash cams, thinkware u1000 a Kenwood and izeeker. The only one that has a clear enough pic to read a license number is the thinkware. Going to replace the others with thinkware U1000's IMO they are the best. A blurred license plate pic does absolutely no good. I've read blackvue is just as good, but I have no experience with them.

This one has the front camera mounted on the unit and a remote rear. My rear is mounted on the cab by the light but could be mounted at the back of your Topper. Normal power cord is a power port but they will send you a hardwire so the unit shuts off but has power all the time for shock monitoring. The rear view is wide so you can see the blind spots. Also has a backup wire that turns on lines which I have not hooked up yet. It attaches to the rearview mirror so no drilling. When shut off it can be used as a regular mirror. Also has GPS so gives speed which is very accurate, you can see the sensor on the right dash. A single wire bundle goes back to the camera.

I’m using a Thinkware U1000 with a rear camera. It has been flawless since install and grab my power from the OBD port. It senses battery voltage and will turn off if it goes below the threshold I set for minimum. Pictures in any light are crisp and clear.

I have a dash cam from my old vehicle that gets its power from usb. I dont suppose there are any USB ports inside the dash area? If not I may have to get a splitter for one of the existing external ports.

I was expecting $500+...this is affordable...how is it mounted to the mirror? Can you take a shot from the other side?

It has straps that hold it to the mirror. They are rubber and hold it very tight. My previous vehicles had them for multiple years and they never moved.

Thanks for the pic...I'm happy to see rubber straps instead of clips that don't fit...did you run the rear camera all the way to the rear? If so, how did you run the cable? That must be a loooooong cable...

Mine is mounted on the cab which gives a great view back and sides. It does have a long cable that would reach the license plate. Mine is in the headliner and exits through the brake light.

I’m really happy with the Thinkware Q800 pro. It is front cam with a separate rear camera. It’s all hidden wires and plug and play with the Echomaster harness kit. Had it about 2 years and it’s been great.

I did the mirror cam as well. I 3d printed a mount for the camera. I'm at work but will get it over to thingiverse for downloading.

I wanted to use the factory camera, but I believe it uses differential video or balanced video (no ground reference, immune to interference. )

Add double stick tape and slide your camera in and stick it to the back window. No holes to drill, and the alignment is perfect! I played with 1,2,3 degree angles but zero worked best. I did one in my wife's F150 as well.
