2022 Ranger Lariat Tremor
I ordered a Maverick in January 2022, and like most people who ordered, I waited and waited. I was close to giving up and had been looking pretty closely at Rangers in February. Right when I was about to pull the trigger on one, I got my Maverick build notification and finally took delivery of a Maverick Lariat Lux 2.0 in April of this year. It was a nice truck, it drove like a small SUV and could definitely win a casual race to the next stoplight against many other cars.

Then I made the mistake of looking at cars.com on a friday afternoon and saw a local dealer had a 2022 Lariat Tremor w/ 8k miles at an almost too good to be true price. By 10:00am saturday, I no longer owned a Maverick and instead owned a Ranger.
  • It was immediately clear to me the Ranger is a much more capable vehicle.
  • Most of my driving is in-town and the gas mileage is pretty darn close to the Maverick there.
  • I have been looking at small campers and this opened up a lot more options for me.
  • RWD / 4WD instead of front-biased AWD feels a lot better on the road.
  • Almost double the towing capacity.
  • It seems I can do a lot more useful things with Forscan. I already disabled Auto-start-stop whereas I had to have a little dongle to do that on the Maverick.
  • It looks way cooler.
On the other hand, there are a few drawbacks:
  • The Maverick had TONS of in-cab storage options, and the Ranger is more limited. The under rear seat storage especially.
  • No power back window on the Lariat. It is far less convenient to reach back there to open / close it.
  • Won't be beating as many grannys in a casual street race.
  • My dogs have trouble jumping up into it.
  • The ride is not quite as nice.
  • Everything is more expensive -- Tonneau is more, SIBL is more, gas will run me more, tires are more expensive, etc. Gotta pay to play though, so I'm not complaining.
  • I initially hated having a knob to shift instead of the stick, but it grew on me. Now I am back to the stick in the Ranger. I'd prefer a column shifter to both options though.
If you were thinking about going to a Maverick from a Ranger or coming to a Ranger from a Maverick, maybe these thoughts will be useful to you. I am personally glad I made the switch, and really with the high trade-in values on Maverick it made it an easy decision even though I only owned it for four months.

This was an interesting read because I have a very similar story. I had a Maverick on order and waited and waited. Last December I decided to test drive a Ranger (as well as a hybrid and ecoboost Mav I found at another dealer). I really liked the EB mav and the Ranger. I decided to pull the trigger on the Ranger, and because it was end of year I got it for $2500 under MSRP. Then, lo and behold, I got a scheduled for production email for my Maverick a few days later, and I wrestled with which car to keep. Ultimately landed on keeping the Ranger for many of the same reasons you state: better towing, better feel, more capabilities, actual 4wd, etc etc. I ordered a hybrid Mav with the idea of selling my old Escape hybrid and using it as my commuting vehicle, but I instead opted to keep the Ranger and use the Escape for commuting.

I still think I would have been happy with the Maverick, but overall I am very happy with the Ranger. My only complaint is the gas mileage; I don't flog mine and I have never gotten over 22mpg on a tank (measured at the pump). A typical tank is 20mpg.

Welcome to the club!

You beat me to it, was going to say tune it!
It is on my agenda. Any insight as to whether Ford has refused warranty work due to a reasonable tune? I know I can reflash before the dealer sees it, but there is still evidence.

Research tunes on here, tons of info. Minimal risk.

I had a Bronco Sport before this and wasn't quite happy with it. I was strongly considering a Maverick. Ended up finding a Ranger Tremor that someone refused pick up on, and couldn't be happier.

Based on your pros and cons I think it was a good choice.

Essentially the same thing here. Wanted a Ranger before finding out about Mavericks, thinking the smaller truck is what I was interested in. Ordered a 23 Maverick on opening day and then waited. Still hasn't been built, but I needed a vehicle before August. So I called my dealer and he offered me a 19 Ranger XLT FX4 with 17k miles at an amazing price. The Maverick should come in end of September and my dealer's left me the opening for trading the Ranger in, but I think I'm going to stick with the Ranger at this point.

I came from the Sport Trac world and a similar experience with storage. Gen 2 Tracs have three compartments in the floor of the bed, plus room under the rear seat. In the Ranger I have a medium sized plastic storage tote in the bed with a 1" hole drilled in each side and secured with a tie-down. Cost: $0.00.

Welcome to the forum! Unfortunately you will end up spending a lot of money on a vehicle that really doesn’t need it? it started with a bed cover, then a tune, then new leveled struts, then new tires, then new rear shocks….. It’s a great vehicle and I hope you enjoy making it your own!

OK, the SIXTY FOUR THOUSAND DOLLAR QUESTION:

wheres your allegiance, Tailgate Damper or No Tailgate Damper?

@AzScorpion BEAT YOU TO IT ????
Amazingly, the Ranger tailgate is lighter weight than the Maverick one is. Regardless, I installed a DeeZee tailgate assist last night :)
