Looks like Houston is "winning" at the moment.

Good info , one would have to do a deep dive into the overall numbers to understand the specifics of types of crime and what areas they occur , most always though the crimes rates are significantly higher in the poorer areas - and often that gets little attention, but when crime rates go up in the more affluent areas - then you hear folks crying for action.
Txquailguy mentions Hollywood - I thought Tarantinos "once upon a time in Hollywood" would have served as a warning to the bad guys not to mess around where studs like Brad Pitt and Dicaprio live as they risk getting burned to a crisp, as Hollywood people apparently arm themselves with flame throwers. :) . I did watch it 2x and after the 2nd viewing did come around to appreciating Pitt's performance - certainly moreso than DiCaprio's in the Revenant.

Only thing they will hear is the crack of rifle fire at 3200 fps
You are doing something wrong if they hear the gun go off.
At that velocity they should be beyond hearing anything by the time the sound arrives.
But I was taught to make every shot count.

A father and son fatally shot a man they accused of stealing a catalytic converter from a Toyota Prius outside their Phoenix home, Arizona police said.

Agustin Chairez Romero, 22, and his father Agustin Chairez Duarte, 46, face charges of second-degree murder in the Tuesday, May 24, shooting, court documents say.

Police responding to reports of a theft at 4:50 a.m. found a 27-year-old man dead inside a crashed vehicle, a Phoenix Police Department news release said.

Officers detained Duarte and Romero, who told police they had confronted the man and shot at him when he tried to drive away, killing him, the release said.

Duarte told police he was awakened by a dog barking and found the Prius on jacks with the catalytic converter removed, court documents said. A Jeep and pickup truck pulled up outside the house.

Duarte and Romero grabbed some guns and went outside to confront the intruders, court documents said. After an argument, the 27-year-old man got back in his Jeep and began to drive away.

Romero and Duarte opened fire, hitting the driver in the head and chest, court documents reported. The Jeep crashed a short distance away.

Catalytic converter thefts are skyrocketing nationwide, The Sacramento Bee reported. Thieves resell the devices, which help reduce smog emissions, for the platinum, palladium or rhodium inside.

Just saw this...

Depends on the particular class and instructor whether you actually shoot a gun, in the class I took at a gun range you were required to shoot .

Your post seemed to imply that having more of the populace armed is an effective way of reducing cat thefts - statistics do not bear that out - including those in Weld County.

Of course crimes rates are going to be higher in denser population areas such as cities - a number of people (myself included) have moved to the rural areas , because we can afford to.

Which brings me to a socioeconomic fact - in general, it's the less affluent who suffer the most from increasing crime - cat theft is a good example as these folks often park on streets or other areas where it's easier for thieves . And reports abound about victims supplying law enforcement with the perps vehicle descriptions and plate nos and an investigation is usually not conducted. For the affluent cat theft is not much of an issue .

CO leads the nation in auto theft rates - a sign of the times here.

I agree that socioeconomics plays a huge role in where folks live and the level of crime they are exposed too. Common sense would dictate that if you live in the suburbs of a large city you will experience less crime than living in the inner city itself.

Ring doorbell video security has widespread coverage in the burbs.....most everyone has one of these devices.....I would surmise that has to have an affect on soft crimes like theft, especially during the day. The neat thing about Nest is the neighborhood security alerts and information. I get a security/crime report for my area each month. I guess what's really cool is how all the Ring doorbells create an active security net for each given geographic area by linking all the devices together (at least for folks that opt in).

As far as car theft and Colorado.....I believe most police departments stopped answering auto theft calls during the Covid shutdown....that probably didn't help the numbers.

You may be correct however I believe there is more at work than just covid as all the events of recent yrs has had an impact on law enforcement's motivation - and not a positive one. It was already a difficult job and now even more so. It took many many consumer complaints and media focus regards Carvana's sales practices to get the AG in CO off his lazy *ss and take action on behalf of those victimized. IMO law enforcement in CO has become extremely lax, traffic regulations are rarely enforced and most criminals are released after apprehension unless they have committed a crime of violence involving personal injury.

in Colorado catalytic converter thefts are up ove 100%. my question is will the Ranger alarm go off do to vibrations. Converters are being stolen with a cordless saws.
TIA
Not really a worry for Ranger cat thefts. Be more concerned with gas thieves that will just puncture your tank for the liquid gold.

I can only speak to my experiences…I work for the City of Arvada and I can tell you I think we have one of the top departments in the state. Not saying they are perfect….I’ve seen some of the imperfections with my own eyes, but they are good folks. As far as traffic enforcement….keep that thought but be real careful around Loveland….again, speaking from experience…?
They know my Ranger well…lol…

Catalytic converter thefts are not a problem in Weld County Colorado.....probably because we encourage folks to walk around armed to the teeth....

Unlike Denver where the leadership thrives on keeping its Citizens in the crosshairs of criminals......

Can't carry in Denver now so I stay away from places I can't defend myself or family.....

These folks are so silly.....why do they think that kid targeted the King Soopers in Boulder? Sadly...what is probably the town/city you would be the least likely to find someone carrying concealed in Colorado?.....Boulder!

You don't hear me talking about this subject much but to be honest.....the way to counter mass shooter events is more folks with permits walking around armed.....IMHO (but the data backs me up on that).

Face it folks.....the police can't be everywhere all the time......

Sorry for the rant.....I'm just tired of hearing how I'm a bad man because I own/carry firearms!!!
