I made the girlfriend mad when walking passed a 4RunnerBro on the interstate. He was really, really trying.

Not really an achievement since 4Runners are slow and reliable, but it was funny watching the 4RunnerCollegeBro getting walked.

Do these engines mind the abuse? I mean, I like to beat on my 4.0, but I have to to climb hills. This new Ranger just glides and feels like it’s not trying so I rarely ever get over 4k RPMs.

also, S mode manual shift is slow, but damn if you let it shift by itself it is unearthly smooth. I love it.

My understanding is that the block was designed for the Mustang, and tuned to handle heavy loads from towing. Additionally, Ford now makes its own tune for it that claims a 45hp increase. My guess is that these engines were designed to handle way more than what we're doing with our Rangers. I'm more worried about the 10R80 transmission, not because I've had issues with it or that it's rated low, just that it's still a relatively new transmission and that there could still be some unknowns.

I’m guessing that spirited driving is also probably good for this engine? I have once or twice played with it, lol.

I'm not that worried about the transmission since it was designed and first used in the F-150 with the 3.5 ecoboost. I'm fairly certain that the Ranger isn't putting anywhere near the same stress on the driveline.

2019 ranger 2.3 engine is sourced from the Ford Focus RS. (350HP,on premium)

The 10R80 transmission is in 2018+ mustangs stock 460HP with some Roush at 750HP and you still get 5-year/60,000-mile Limited Powertrain Warranty.

I would be more worried about all the tech than the power train.

That's fair, I guess I just go by the ol' mantra "the more moving parts, the more that can fail"

The 10R80 is a crazy feat of engineering, but has a lot to go wrong. Doesn't mean it will.

Former RS owner here. Same motor in the RS and I am shocked when I look at the use of this engine and see the variety of outputs from the same motor. My RS was tuned to 400HP and I can't help but think that deep pockets and motivation could get the Ranger well near that 300 is very easy as it's what the same motor in the Explore makes.

I only have 800 miles on the truck and really never put my foot into it not having the need but yesterday I was trying to merge with rapid traffic and was pleasantly surprised by how she got up and went! I got way out in front of the herd. Then, having been inspired I put it in sport mode and was even more impressed.

I didn't buy it expecting it to be quick and I've been toying with the Ford Performance Tune but I have to wonder, why would I bother

Because Too Much Is Never Enough :sunglasses:

I remember when I bought my RX7 turbo and thought Wow this thing is fast!

Then I added an exhaust and Wow it really woke it up!

Then I added an intake and Wow again!

Then I added a computer and Wow (actually Wow 2x because it was overpowering the stock clutch and I had to do a street/strip clutch)

There were a few more Wows added including a large number of Wows subtracted from my net worth

You get accustomed to the new power quickly and I got it to a point where it was not very reliable (is any Rx7 reliable?) so I thought I would go get a Camaro SS or Mustang Cobra. I drove them both and was underwhelmed.

It's a slippery slope that can be very compelling to start a slow slide down and end up farther than you ever planned to go.

Been there and done that. Ruined some perfectly good cars along the way

Mine will chirp the tires at shift. Recently I was in a situation where I needed to go from a stop in a left turn lane back onto a busy 60 mph semi divided roadway. I hit the throttle hard in D to go and chirped the tires for a second or so when it shifted to second. I could even feel a slight rear end wiggle. I was surprised at getting rubber in second (third? lol). I didn't power brake so no rubber at launch.

Believe the ranger has the same variable timing as the ecoboost mustang. Mustang 2.3 can advance or retard timing. It will take a tank or two of 93 for it to learn and advance timing increasing HP. Mustang 2.3 on premium (93) has 310HP but can run regular (87) but with 270ish HP.
Now might not be the same gains due to different intake and exhaust on ranger.

Had a mustang 2.3 loaner while my car was at the dealer for 3 weeks and is was a dog. Until i filled up with 93 a couple times it really woke it up.

I have a lot of fun with this truck. One thing which happens about once a week is someone wants to stretch their WHATEVERTRUCKBRANDMODEL pickup against mine. Usually by looking at each other, smiling and well having some fun.

I’ve smoked plenty of tacos, a few tundras, frontiers, Colorado’s and the like today was special :)

Brand new model year Silverado z71. Dude pulled up next to me slipping his truck into neutral revving it like a mad man. I looked. We smiled. I slipped into sport and manual button shift.

Light turns green, we’re off. I’m about 3/4 down he’s hanging to my back corner panel. After a few seconds I open up to the floor and in a blink 40-85 like a bloody jet. Now five car lengths behind I let off the gas and coast down.

He come up next to me with just a look of complete and absolute utter shock. I couldn’t help but cackle and nod my head at him.

How I’ve managed to not get a ticket in the 7300 plus miles of fun since November is beyond me.

Smoking a decked z71 2019/20 MY though. Absolutely priceless.

I love this freaking truck ?
Tacos are the number 1 selling vehicle here in Hawaii, so there's no lack of them looking for a challenge.
I test drove a 2019 V6 4x4 last year and honestly thought it was powered by a four cylinder so I know for a fact that they don't present much of a challenge against my Ranger.
What is fun however is beating them off the line with my beater '02 Honda CR-V 2.4 4 banger with a 5 spd. automatic.
Poor Taco drivers, how can anyone be so blind?

I have a Tacoma. Didn't realize I was blind.
