I put a SmartCap on mine after removing the GFC. It’s not exactly cheap and the install process is a PITA but it looks great and offers a lot of functionality.

Is that the case, would it require a welder? I'm worried that anything short of metal or fiberglass wouldn't handle much roll. But what do I know?

I had the same question earlier this year. I was advised to look at used toppers. Some of the best advice I ever got. Picked up my Ranch Sierra for a great price from a member here. Less than half the cost of new with bonus of $900 Yakima rack system (retail price from Ranch dealer if ordered that way).

I bought a Leer 100R and added sliding side windows plus a pull out sliding rear window for $2385. The sliding windows are because it keeps my Lab who rides in the bed in a kennel on trips cool

Well, I might have more problems than the shell if I rolled over.
I was thinking some hard rocking from climbing, but you sound plenty confident, so I'll take your word for it.

Ah I see what you mean...a cap like Leer and others are typically C-clamped to the bed rails which has been proven pretty sturdy for decades...a slide in camper like what I'm working on is typically secured at four to the bed's tie down points with ratchet straps or hard steel turn buckles and that's has also been proven to be a reliable method...even with units that are over 1,200 pounds...either way you go, people have installing caps and slide-ons safely for decades...

Basic entry-level model fibreglass topper from ARE (CX Classic) - colour match paint - no front slider because my truck doesn’t have a slider. Sliding side windows (standard) - single T-lock (standard). No options at all. Installed by dealer.

This topper is a few years old now. It performs as expected and does not leak. I installed a platform rack after a year or so. No cracks, no movement, no issues. Even a base model like this will be pricey these days and you’ll likely have to wait a while to take delivery.
