So this month I bought a used 2021 Ranger Lariat Tremor with 44K miles from a VW dealer. Their warranty is only 90 days/1k miles. I just got back from a 3-day, 600-mile round trip and now the tranny is acting weird. Hunts for the right gear on slow acceleration, hesitates then lurches once or twice on fast acceleration, plus after stopping at a light it jumps forward an inch or two. Seemed to get worse along the way. Am I experiencing the transmission issue everyone’s been talking about here, or something else? Since the VW dealer I bought from would just take it to Ford anyway, and I don’t have a relationship with my local Ford dealer, how should I discuss this when I take it to Ford service? Thanks!

It appears that you’re still under the 5 year/60000 Ford power train warranty. It doesn’t matter where you bought it from. No need to mention it. But you do want to make the Ford dealer aware of TSB 25-2134 which refers to transmission issues on the 2019-2023 Rangers.

Your symptoms sound similar to the bucking and surging thread. Search for it on the forums. You may just need a new EGR Sensor.

Yeah search up some threads here on DPFE sensor replacements. Mine went bad with moisture in it which caused bucking/surging or simulating gear hunting problems... replaced it under warranty when it was diagnosed has been fine for now...though some say it will go bad again.

I have replace two of these sensor one on the first 2019 Ranger I purchased for work and one for my wife just recently. At no time did I ever have either truck " plus after stopping at a light it jumps forward an inch or two." Nor did either "Hunts for the right gear on slow acceleration,".

All of mine bucked at a maintained speed at or below 50 and you could make it stop by putting in sport mode.

Yet at least a few people in that thread reported lurching when coming to stop, or feeling like the truck was hunting gears at slower speeds. And the sensor helped them.

I'd also think he would complain of rough shifts if it was really a transmission issue.

Considering 9/10 people's transmission concerns can be solved with replacing this sensor or getting a tune I'd start with the cheapest option.

I understand where you're coming from to be honest with old blue I thought it was the transmision too but I never had the issues he had. One thing he can do is put the truck in sport mode and see if the issues go away that would be a dead giveaway, and it is free to do.

I agree with the sport mode or tow mode. I bought the replacement EGR sensor when I thought I was experiencing some of those issues like lurching or hunting for gears.

After some aftermarket upgrades and a tune my problems went away. So I just think it was the factory wonky transmission programming. So I still have the sensor for a rainy day.

Update: issue is there in both Drive and Sport modes. In fact it’s more noticeable in Sport. Hopefully bring it into the dealer tomorrow.

Then it is not the EGR sensor then.

Yeah sadly. Hopefully you'll still get replaced under the TSB OP.

Going into the dealer later this month. They’re so busy they have a dedicated transmission guy who only takes in vehicles with tranny issues on Mondays. Of course now that I have an appointment it’s been driving okay!

Update. Dealer said it was a “corrupted shifting strategy”. They reprogrammed and said it’s shifting fine now. Pick it up later today.
