This issue was the biggest disappointment of my Ranger. I Have a Boxer Dog who travels in the back and the fact that the rear seat doesn't fold to a flat area gives him a smaller and less comfortable bed!!

My back seat has only been folded up once; when the dealer was showing me everything inside the truck. Since then, I have moved 6 hours away, carrying moving boxes and other household stuff in the cab as well as the bed.

My Mariner has the flip forward - fold flat type seats, my '18 Escape the seatback only folds and not quite flat. Progress?

I had a 57 chev business coupe. No back seat just ply wood covering the back and floor. Maybe Ford should make a business truck. They could also make a business uv. . BSUV.

I had one of the original Escapes. Seat bottom folded up against the front seat backs and the back seat back folded down. For more room, the seat bottom was easily removable. Twas a very nice arrangement, probably why they changed it.

That used to be very popular across manufacturers, but is much less common now. It could be that they changed for no reason, but it's more likely because they found out that it wasn't worth the engineering costs because not many people actually ever used the feature. (I know I rarely did because on a smaller car it impacted how far back you could put the front seat, it made it impossible to shove items onto the floor between the rear seat and the front seat, and I honestly just didn't care enough about whether the surface was flat to be interested in taking the extra steps necessary to achieve that. The only cases I can think of where a flat load floor is really essential tend to also be ones where the back of the rear seat isn't going to be a useful space anyway.)

All valid points in favor of discontinuing the feature. However, the removable back seat cushion pretty much negates them. It took all of a minute to remove and opened up a ton of storage. Even with the seat back down, you could stash stuff on the rear floor.

My 2014 focus had the seat forward, back down for it's rear bench. There's no reason why it can't work for the Ranger, or any car, really
If course it can work, the question is whether enough people care to justify spending the money to make it work. Since nobody on this thread refused to buy the ranger because of the seat configuration it would seem Ford made the right call.

The new 6G Bronco, due out this fall/winter will share many components with the 6G Ranger, including interior foundations. They might have different looking seats, but I would guess the structures will be the same because of crash certification. And using the same basic seating for the two is better economy of scale. I just hope that they both have a fold flat design, Even though I don't flip my seats down more than once or twice a year, Its nice to have them folded flat when I do!

Yup. Ford made the right call on so many things. That's why you see so many of them out on the streets.
There are 263 million cars in the united states. Ford sold 90 thousand rangers last year. On average you should see one ranger in every 3000 or so cars. Happy hunting.

While the back seat is a poor design and can be improved, it's still a 5% problem. I'm not going to dismiss the rest of the truck to spite the one thing that doesn't negatively affect the experience.

If Ford makes it better, then the truck is improved. If not, then it is still better than the other 3 options, in my opinion.

Ford didn't succeed with ranger because of the back seat design. They succeeded in almost every other point, though. Or, more specifically, they succeeded due to the greater sum of all of the parts, bad or good.

The seat is a laziness of legacy and it needs to be redesigned. I don't think anyone beyond a statistical anamoly is arguing against this.

So why are we all having this discussion?

No idea, but if anyone comes up with a neat storage solution for the bench seat as it is... That is a conversation to have.

The seat bottom should be a 60/40 design as a bare minimum. Some sort of bed cover is a must for most also. I had a 2002 Sport Trac and the rear bottom was pretty high off the floor and the seat backs folded flat via a hand lever. I believe they were 60/40 seat backs. Memory doesn't recall the seat bottom doing anything, but there was room under it and the fact that the backs could be folded was nice. Either the back's should fold flat or the bottoms should fold up in a 60/40 configuration. It's a total gaffe by Ford to make the bottom a single bench design. I imagine it will be addressed in the real "new" Ranger coming in a few years.

Has anyone come up with or found an after market improvement in the rear under seat storage. Ford was sleeping at the wheel when they designed this. The jack handle has no place to be attached with straps to posts on driver side storage area. The first thing I did was to unstrap the handle and put it behind the seat with the jack. I am still stuck with the posts. Try sliding a heavy suitcase in that area. My idea of a design would be to cover the storage compartment with a hinged door that is incorporated in the carpet. This would be aesthetically clean and smooth.
I just keep gloves and bungee cords under the seat. I do wish the floor was more flat with the rear bench seat up. However, I bought a waterproof pet cover for the bench seat that fits quite nicely. Now I can just throw my ski boots on the seat or anything else that is dirty, like my brother-in-law. Good boy!
