As Muddy Fenders said, the shifting behavior is what it is due to Ford wanting to get the most MPG out as possible. Sport mode and/or Tow-Haul mode are a bit better and many owners drive in those modes.

FWIW, my turbo 2016 Subaru Forester is also very anemic in the default drive mode. I 100% drive that vehicle in Sport mode, for the same reasons. Blame CAFE and manufactures wanting to advertise the best possible MPG figures.

As for tune, only the Ford Performance Tune maintains warranty, but it does somewhat reduce it down to 3/36k and a certified mechanic needs to install it :(

BTW Forscan will allow you to zero the Adaptive Learning Tables.
Isn’t a Forscan rather expensive? I would like to delete stop/start. I usually drive in Tow/Haul which turns it off, but would like to permanently shut it off

No. The recommended OBDII dongle is about $50 on Amazon here. I believe there is a trial for Forscan that is free. I bought a year license when I used it, right now they are $12.

Lots of ways to disable the Auto Stop/Start. I used the Auto Stop Start Eliminator (but it is around $70-90). Many people plug a small night light into the 120V plug behind the center console, which works also.

Cool, thanks. Forgot about the light in the rear of the center console. I have been using tow/Haul mode too. It shifts every gear and I like that, the first to third is a weird one and not always as smooth as 1, 2 and three. Thanks

I’ve had my 2022 Tremor for a couple months now with only 1,500 miles on it. I’ve already had it back to the dealer to zero the Adaptive Learning Tables in hopes it will fix a number of issues (all discussed here).
If you're at 1500 miles and have already reset the learning, there's a good chance you still haven't waited long enough.

Thanks for the replies.

I’ve started running in Sport mode when I know I’ll need to accelerate more aggressively (HWY On ramp, when merging/crossing a busy road, etc.). It’s definitely better than standard drive mode. I just wish it shifted into Sport mode and didn’t slip out easily.

I’ll bide my time and look at tuners for later as I approach the end of the warranty.

As I said before, love the truck, just not impressed with the programming on the transmission.
Yeah transmission is finicky. If I’m going up a hill in normal and just keeping it around 20 I can come close to getting it to stall because it’s in 7th gear. Gets annoying because sometime I like to zone out a bit and just cruise and this transmission lets me know when I’m doing that. That and the feeling of all road imperfections (maybe suspension or tires, fully stock truck) are my only two gripes. Other than those the truck acts and performs like a truck I can actually get stuff done with. Truck really wants you to accelerate until fully up to speed.

Try driving in only tow or sport mode...just do away with the regular drive. At low speeds in drive especially when turning my 2021 almost always studdered and felt like it was going to stall.
Stopped using "drive" after a few days and now always use tow mode...first button I hit right after the auto start/stop button.
Tow mode will eliminate the slow speed/turning problems, and driving in tow mode all the time will not hurt the tranny.
Same goes for sport mode, but tow mode is more mpg friendly.

So you're saying the OP is a slow learner...

Sorry. It was there.

Just be lucky its not a manual 10 speed. At least you could grab all the gears.

Also, when attempting to accelerate while moving in normal mode, it doesn’t like to down shift. When it finally does, it dumps two - three gears and sounds like you’re a wannabe NASCAR racer. Ford could have done better.

I still love my truck, just wish I wasn’t thinking about the tranny when I’m driving. Looking forward to the Warrantee wearing out so I can get a tuner.

There are many complaints about how the tranny is programmed - I feel the most obvious is that the programming favors mpg , but I think also folks need to keep in mind that the 2.3 is still a relatively small displacement engine, yes it makes good power from the turbo but there are situations when you don't have much boost available, hence power is down and the tranny needs to downshift to get the rpms and power up - that's a characteristic of any small displacement turbos I've driven in the past, be it a manual, 4 spd or 10 speed auto box. And a numbers of posts on here boast about how high their mpgs are and some will chime in on other threads that the tranny is poorly programmed. Can't win em all.

That’s fair. That said, and I realize this is apples and oranges, but I get better throttle response out of my kids’ 2015 Corolla and that’s a very small displacement engine. And they can do it, since towing and sport modes are smoother.

Concerning fuel economy, I’m computing 1-1.2 MPG less than what the dash is telling me every time I fill up. ?

Common, Ford!

I also realize that this discussion has devolved into complaining since there doesn’t seem to be anything I can do until I’m willing to put a tuner in it.

I really do love this thing, though!

This is the first thing I fixed on my truck, once I got the first 1,000 mile assessment out of the way. I made a new map for fixing this with the transmission in Drive mode. I wanted something between Sport and Drive, without all the engine braking of tow mode. My truck is much more enjoyable to drive now.

Appreciate it. Yeah truck will take a bit to get used to. I can tell what the transmission is trying to do by always being in the highest gear possible but it’s different than anything else I’ve driven so I’m sure I’ll learn all the ins and outs. And tow mode made a pretty big difference. I’m curious to see if tow mode or sport will work better for going up and down hills with engine braking.

That sounds like it would be perfect. I have no idea how to do this but I probably would if I had the ability. Just unhooked the battery tonight to reset the adaptive learning so I’ll see how it goes.
