Hey all,

I finally did it—I got into my first little “accident” with my truck.

I backed into a delivery truck and busted my passenger side tail light. Totally my fault, but goddamnit he wasn’t parked in a proper loading zone!! đŸ€Ź

I heard the back-up sensor beeping, but not rapidly, so I thought I was fine. Unfortunately, the truck was much higher than my bumper so the bumper didn’t sense it.

Anyhow, what are my options (besides a dealer) for replacement? Is it something I can install on my own?

Thanks in advance!

Man, that sucks. I'm sorry that, that happened. Unfortunately I don't have any place in mind other than the dealership for a replacement tail light. My 2 cents.
Good luck brother.

Yeah it fucking sucks! And on the last day of school before summer break đŸ˜© Great way to start my summer break, looking for a tail light.

I found one on eBay for $70, but I’m skeptical. I don’t wanna cheap out on something that’s not gonna work properly.

Read through this thread. Maybe you will see an acceptable option.

I am sure others will be along soon to help you narrow down proper replacements. Much depends on your trim level and options I think, as well as how much you are prepared to spend. It won't be cheap, I'm afraid.

Thanks, Chris. Yeah I know it won’t be cheap, but that’s the punishment I get for being a knucklehead. I’d rather spend a little more to get something quality.

That sucks. :( Chris has set you on the right path. You can do this on your own. That thread should help.

Based on price, that $70 unit sounds like an aftermarket or used halogen assembly for the XL trim level - not the LED version for XLT and Lariat.

Good luck.

Thanks for the heads up! Yeah I have the XLT.

For that price - read the (DETAILS) as it may have cracks etc on the lens, also you do not need the BLIS (Module) as you can swap that over to the new one.

Edit:
The prices have dropped considerably on these from a few years ago, thanks to aftermarket becoming available.

Mine got busted earlier this year, but fortunately, I wasn't the one responsible so it went on someone else's insurance. There was a bit more damage to the bumper, etc., that also had to be repaired, so it ended up going through the body shop.

Anyway, I learned that due to the BLIS, it's a sealed unit, so the dealership will only sell you that, meaning that you replace not only the casing, but also the LEDs and the BLIS. The entire unit was worth about C$3,000. I did find some knock-off casings for about C$120-C$150, which you could use since you don't appear to have damaged anything other than the casing.

Since it wasn't my dime and there was other damage that needed to be fixed, I let the body shop just replace the entire unit, but otherwise I would have probably gone that route.

I found a used one on eBay when mine was broken. Don’t remember what it costs but it was way cheaper than a dealer or ordering from a ford parts seller. It’s not hard to do yourself, took me 5 mins.
$70 is cheap
Probably doesn’t come with the blind spot sensor. I think mine was 2-300 used.

Make sure to seal up the broken taillight so water doesn't enter the light. It will destroy the BLIS module if it gets wet. You should be able to get just the taillight and transfer the BLIS module over to the replacement light. You could remove the BLIS module, so it doesn't get damaged from water intrusion.

Bob makes a good point above about closing that assembly up until you can replace it. Tons of solutions on Amazon and likely at your local automotive store. I like this one because of the size.

I'd be careful buying taillights on eBay. People are still getting Ranger taillights stolen. I just saw another post on a Ranger Facebook group where someone had both taillights taken. Not saying every set on eBay is stolen, but it's something to keep in mind when shopping for used parts.

I ended up just using Tuck Tape which I had lying around, and it worked great. Taped it from the bottom up so that the overlapping layers would keep moisture from seeping in. I don't have a great picture of it, but as you can see from this one (look on the passenger side, bottom half of the tail light), it did its job through a few heavy snowfalls and assorted storms.
