Follow up. They noticed that something was odd with the transmission. They did a transmission reset and held it for another day. However, it's not cold enough to cause my truck's transmission to have any trouble. No charge and they gave the truck a needed car wash. I put it on my calendar to repeat this assessment. January 2027. Here in eastern Pennsylvania, we're back to a typical spring weather which will not get us into the 20° range so the problem should not occur for the rest of the year.

I have similiar issues. I do not want to have to take it back multiple times. I spoke with a new dealer service rep today they seemed to want to help. My original dealer had my truck diagnosing it two weeks with 0 results. Bummer.

UPDATE 5:

After tearing apart the transmission, and submitting the photos/info to Ford corporate; they advised the shop to perform a complete transmission rebuild. Looks like I'll be out a truck for another week minimum. Truck was originally dropped off on President's day. I did ask the SA if the new rebuilt transmission came with a warranty and he said "3 year unlimited miles".............I'll definitely be getting that in writing after going through all this, haha.

Can’t wait to read the repair order notes on this one. If you can, post a copy of it here

Hello everyone, I just found out yesterday my transmission needs to be repaired or replaced. I paid $220 for the dealer to diagnose it. They didn't tell me specifically what was wrong. $12,000 for a new transmission or a repair for an estimated $7,000. I have 131,000 miles so no warranty, I'm on my own. Need to choose between getting rid of the Ranger or fixing it.

I had a clunk when shifting into reverse, harsh shifts especially between 3-4 and they said it was making noise while shifting it wasn't supposed to.

I would investigate highly rated local transmission shops instead of the dealer - 12k for a new transmission sounds pretty excessive honestly..

If I ever need to have mine fixed I will be taking it to a local shop, not a dealer. Fortunately, there is a highly rated transmission shop near me that has been around for like 50 years.

My dealer told me they actually do not have a transmission tech, and they send their jobs out to a third party. I do appreciate that the service advisor told me he wouldn't pay that price and said an independent shop would likely be a better route. I also need a new driveshaft (my second) and I'm curious about what it's going to cost in total.

That makes a lot of sense - at least they were upfront about it. They have to tack on their "markup" for the third party shop which is most likely where the 12k came in.

UPDATE 6:

Received the truck back with the rebuilt transmission. SA advised me it may drive a little strange for the next 100-500 miles as the TCU relearns. Unfortunately, I now have a completely new issue when I come to a stop. It feels like something is loose and clunks hard after the vehicle is completely stopped. I called the SA and he’s going to talk to the transmission guy to see how long he needs to diagnose/fix this. Needless to say, I’m getting really fed up as I’m going to be out of a truck again. I’ll keep this thread updated to reference as I get more info. Attached are the repair notes for those interested:

Outer shell or also known as trash can. Introduced updated one sometime in 2024. So there were transmissions built with updated CDF but have old style outer shells. Hard to say if valve body caused outer shell failure or the other way around. Chicken or the egg

I tried to see if Ford would help, they said no. Worth a shot.

Mine diffinitely went to diagnosis although I did not have catastrophic failure. My dealer did not do squat. I have a new service department that would have diagnosed and repaired it hopefully under warrantee it, but I was looking at monthor more and extended car rental beyond 10 days gives you a car.
I traded mine in as it was functioning albiet occasional hard shift and the cdc drum did not slam if warmed and I backed into a space to avoid using reverse. It might have lasted but I did not want to find out. Just the excuse I neededto get in a new truck.
