Went up to Phoenix for the day and over to our old neighborhood to see a few old friend then off to have lunch. After we ate lunch I headed over to Scottsdale which is on the other side of the valley. I had a hutch custom made for Annie as a surprise because the one we had in our house in Goodyear I had sold when we moved. She didn’t want me to sell it but it wouldn’t have went with the new house decor in AR at all. Now that we’re back here I called the owner where I bought it (back in Sept. when I bought the house) and asked if he could make one up but in a 48” (the other was 60”) because I have a specific spot it needs to go in. Long story short he said yes and told me it was ready on January 6th and since then I’ve been asking him for pictures and have got nothing but excuses. Now I know why.
I knew it wouldn’t be exact but this looks nothing like the original which I had sent him to duplicate. Plus it was still in the back room on the bench which looks like it was just thrown together. I told him we didn’t like it and I wanted the initial deposit back as I had put half down ($526) and he was refusing to give it back. I’m usually pretty calm but now I was pissed because this was clearly nothing like I had ordered, he ruined the whole surprise because Annie had no idea I was doing this. So I started making a huge stink in the store to the point he finally just refunded it back. At least the day wasn't a total loss, we had a good meal earlier in the day. lol
The color is off but very similar on the hardware. Is it the middle door?Sorry, it's a little long and I''m venting.Went up to Phoenix for the day and over to our old neighborhood to see a few old friend then off to have lunch. Take a look at these pictures and tell me this looks even remotely close.I knew it wouldn’t be exact but this looks nothing like the original which I had sent him to duplicate. Man customer service just stinks now!
Tell me these look even remotely close? Even Stevie Wonder could see they’re not.

The hardware is the only thing that matches. The color is way off it looks like they used a dark walnut stain giving it the dark chocolate brown tone and the original one was more of an early American stain which has a brownish red tone. Sorry, I was an interior painter for 42 years and am critical with colors. The color is off but very similar on the hardware. Is it the middle door?
Got it. Pictures don't always tell the story plus you know what you wanted and if he built the last one then this should have been easy. The hardware is the only thing that matches. Also the copper insets aren't copper like the original one and that's the whole look she wanted to go with our south western stuff. The right door looks like a cat used it for a scratching post and the stain is worn away there too. The style going across between the draws and top of the doors on the left side is worn away there.
You're right pictures don't always do it justice and it's hard to see the scratches and the worn spots. I don't even mind the scratched that much (but there are a lot of them on the door) because it's a rustic piece and not supposed to be perfect. We were a little shocked how the owner handled it but I guess I shouldn't have been. Oh well, life goes on.Got it. How disappointing. Yeah if you can see it (I know you're color blind) it has to be obvious. The inserts were just some dark metal to make it look rustic, not the copper like the other we had. They have a bunch of different pieces in their store that have this same copper look so it's pretty common. How disappointing. Clearly, you were really looking forward to this surprise.
Even I can tell that’s WAY too dark. They also went more than a step too far with the distressing. Bummer.
Without the copper inserts, it just looks so dark - no real contrast - no light reflecting. What did they use on those panel inserts? It’s hard to tell from the picture but did they try to fake it with plywood and a faux finish?
Nice work. If you were closer I would've had you build it!I don’t build a lot of fancy stuff but when I can’t find what I want, I just fire up the wood shop and build it myself.

That stinks. Wonder if he just orders them from Mexico and resells them if it was in stock already. That would have set me off also. Getting that look takes time and I don't see how he could custom build a matching one at the price you were given. I bet you could find something close in a second hand shop or unfinished furniture store and refinish it to your liking. The hardware, trim, and copper would be easy to add. You may even find a local blacksmith to custom make it. You have plenty of time on your hands and I bet it would mean even more to Annie in the end. Plus it would be a fun thread for everyone to follow.Yeah if you can see it (I know you're color blind) it has to be obvious. Disappointed doesn't even describe it. I was going through my text messages with them which start on September 2 2025, the day I bought the house.
I found these pictures below which really make me mad now. I wanted to see a similar one and here's the picture he sent me. Notice the date, it's the same one they had on the bench yesterday! Right down to the scratches and the worn stain and the same knot is in the style under the draw. It looks like all they did was change out the inserts (a 10 minute job from the back) because this one was a little darker. So he's (the owner!) been lying to me all along and they never had made it like he said.![]()

They actually make them there in house. When I first asked him about it he said it would be approximately 2-3 months which I was fine with. When I called him in early December to give him the deposit he said it would be done a lot sooner because he just hired another carpenter. I would've rather he just told me the truth and said we're busy and can't get to it for several months. Heck, I would've been fine if he just waited until all the snowbirds left and they were slow to do it. Some people just don't know how to run a business which is getting more evident lately. That stinks. Wonder if he just orders them from Mexico and resells them if it was in stock already.
