Background:
2021 Ranger xlt 2wd@110k. Did the first fluid drain, refill and filter change at 77k. I have had a livernois tune since the beginning of ownership. The trans never gave me any major issues. It had its rare quirks.. Ie.. Shift hard to reverse and park, and a hiccup here and there. I could count on my fingers how many times that has happened.

Last week my transmission started making a metal on metal sound when I would start off in 1st. Would go away once it shifted into 2nd and then hear it again on the 3rd to 4th shift. Drove fine at higher speeds.
I immediately went to autozone picked up a few quarts of valvoline ulv and a bottle of lubegard platinum. Then immediately went home. Sucked out 5 quarts and added back in the same out including the lubegard.

Made a few prayers and off I went for a test drive.

Intially 1st gear still made a noise, then it was 4th to 5th. As the day went along the sounds would come and go. The shifting was MUCH smoother. Two days of driving and no more noises when shifting.

A week later all I hear is a slight "turbo diesel whine" in 1st gear. Everything else is honestly working better then new. So maybe the torque converter is not doing so well?

Confession :

I'm not big on additives and that's why I never jumped on the lubegard train. I admit I should have done it earlier. If you are on the fence... Give it a try. My trans has never felt better.

Metal on metal sounds don't fix themselves.

I feel you may have bought some time but the damage has likely already been done.

Any metal in the fluid you removed?

I agree, which is why I'm suprised that majority of the noise went away and it shifts so much better.

Ya Ya Ya.. I was feeling pretty confident about my Transmission with having high miles and zero issues.

One option I have in mind is to buy that upgraded cdf drum I seen posted somewhere on here. Though it might not be the cdf and could be a torque converter issue. Probably just end up buying both.

Watching the install vid it doesn't seem to hard to do it myself.

I've been thinking it over, probably better just find a used 2022 transmission or just get a shop to rebuild mine.

It doesn't seem to hard replacing the cdf drum but idk if I could do everything else. I've never rebuilt a transmission.

If you find a late 2022 or a 2023. There are date codes on the transmission and you want to find something with a date code of 22230 ish or higher out of a 2022. Anything with a date code starting with 23001 and above will be good also.

Good idea...I chose to replace my tranny with a new factory crate unit rather than a rebuild...price is about the same...

Did the new Tranny need to be flashed at the dealer?

Yes, this step must be performed along with resetting the adaptive tables.
Any High-End scan tool can do it, it does not require FDRS - it is a self-guided program of the scan tool.
I do not believe Forscan has this, reset the adaptive learning is all Forscan has if I am correct.

Basically, if a new valve body is installed you must program the PCM with the proper Solenoid information, be it valve body replacement or new / reman trans

Trans Programming.webp

This placard is located on the Driver's side of the transmission, just behind the shifter cable - hard to see with the eyes, must use a camera to see it.
This information also comes with a new valve body.

I would say yes, as I recall others mention that the PCM is locked to the Tuner (programming) so the software within the Scan Tool would not be able to update the PCM. Now it's possible that the Tune Device (tool) might allow it to program the new solenoid information as a by-pass.

RIP 10R80... 115K

Drain/fill and adding a bottle of lubegard gave me an extra 5k of use. I was pretty optimistic all was fine when the whining noise was 100% gone and the shifting was fine.

Yesterday while on the interstate, 10th gear@70mph, I went to slowly accelerate and the rpms shot up. Wouldn't downshift. Driving around town it seems to be fine.

Drop another bottle of lubegard and see how much longer I can milk this?
