Creating this to document my experience with the warranty process for my ranger’s transmission. Other people’s threads on this subject and many other topics have helped me so hopefully this can help someone else.

I have 36k miles. In the last 6k miles, it has been shuddering, clunking, and rough shifting all the time, especially at lower speeds/gears. I set an appointment for 9/8/25 to drop it off and after a bit of back and forth was guaranteed a loaner. They claim to have the correct equipment to perform the latest TSB, so I’m hoping they can do the procedure that the TSB outlines. I will be updating this thread as i progress with this process.

Also, I was talking to a guy who works at a transmission repair shop and has repaired a couple hundred of 10r80s. Here is some of what he said:
(This is not my transmission)

“The 3 major issues are the CDF drum, whats called the “trash can” that houses all of the internals and some valves that wear and stick in the valve body.

The cdf drum has a sleeve that moves and causes a very hard 3-5 upshift or no movement at all depending on how bad it gets.

This is the updated part with a lip to hold the sleeve in place

IMG_5529.jpeg

This is an example of the sleeve thats moved

The trash can splines the F clutches and they tend to cut into the metal and bind causing a harsh 5-7 upshift or 5-6 upshift depending on load

The valvebody is fixed via a shift kit that replaces a lot of parts

the shudder is likely caused by either the main presure regulator valve, torque converter control valve or a combination of both being worn in the valvebody. The clunk could be one of either the main pressure regulator again, CDF drum or F clutch hub.

If the shudder feels like driving on a rumble strip at highway speed id take it in and insist the dealer takes care of that sooner than later if youre in warranty. otherwise youll be paying to have the remains of the torque converter clutch cleaned from every nook and cranny in the transmission as well as repair anything that was damaged by that same debris.”

Following this, I don’t have transmission issues yet, but wanted to be aware of what the issues are. I have a 2019 With 65K now, and expect at some point I will need to have this done. Where would I find the TSB for this issue? Thanks

There's a bunch of transmission failure threads in the forum, and if you scroll all the way to the bottom of this thread they will present themselves (some of them).

I think the ntsb will have something and ford does somewhere but I depend on this forum for a lot of news like that. I usually will check afterword on the ford site.

I have a 21 with 39k on the clock. Hard shifting up and down, and the occasional huge surge when nearly stopped. Took it to the dealer, gave a description. They Ran some tests and rebuilt it. Took about a week. No muss, no fuss, completely shocked, I didn't have to play games. The truck drives like new again.

Just a brief update. I dropped my ranger off at the dealership and they handed me the keys to a bronco sport outer banks with the Sasquatch package. It’s certainly a lot nicer than my ranger, all though it does look a bit goofy with the bullbar. I asked the service manager about the 10r80 transmissions - he said they rebuilt/replaced 20 last week alone. He also said people occasionally come back after the rebuild/replacement and still have issues. He said they are going to do the tests today and he will call me. I hope the tests come back with the findings and they will do a rebuild/replacement.

Not if but when.
Having lost faith in the tranny, and not really in need of a pick up truck, back in July I traded my Ranger for a new Bronco Badlands

Okay so another update - I am not 100% happy but am hopeful. At least something will be getting fixed.

The ranger passed all the tests detailed in the latest TSB. I have no idea how it passed as they immediately drove it after and agreed that something is seriously wrong. Right now, they are going to crack it open to replace (with new and updated parts) at a minimum the valves/valve body and the trashcan/basket. Apparently if that's all they do they will have it back to me tomorrow. After seeing some of you guys have to wait so long on here i figured a week at least. That means they are stocking the parts and ford Knows its an issue, so maybe a recall soon? (Wishful thinking I know)

If they find more issues while in the transmission the CDF drum will be getting replaced as well along with any other parts. My biggest concern is that really the whole transmission needs to be rebuilt with updated parts including the CDF drum. I prefer not to be stranded somewhere or have major issues pop up after may when my warranty is up.

Has anyone else on here just had the valves and basket/trash can done? If so, have you had to go back to have the drum replaced?

It would be criminal if they bust it down and not put the updated cdf drum in it even if it isn’t showing signs of the bushing moving in it . I believe there was one recently that had the exact same scenario as yours. They ended up with the CDF drum being replaced along with with the trash can, clutches and plates. Even though theirs also passed the CDF drum test.

Well that is good to hear, I am really hoping they do end up replacing it all once they get it open, it would make no sense to not replace it then from a dealership side and then have me come back with the same issue get another loaner, and all that. I imagine the price of the labor to open it up is 10x more than the price of the drum, so from a financial standpoint it doesnt make sense for Ford corporate side.

I would push for a full replacement. Everything is new and updated. The transmission tech at my dealer said that and it wasn’t to make him more money. He said he gets paid less for a full swap but its easier and gives me the best results. That was 32k miles ago. Still feels better than the one my truck came with. So maybe this one will make it 80k lol

In 2024, my 2022 had 34K. Same issues. Valve body replaced. CDF drum replaced.

After the CDF drum, it drove like new again also. Then, 25K miles later (most of which were smooth as butter), issues popped back up and I was told I needed a new valve body and torque converter. Again. Ford agreed to replace the transmission under warranty (I had 75k warranty). At that point, with under 10k miles left in warranty and after my 5th warranty issue, I traded it in got a 6g.

I've mentioned this in other threads before, and I don't point it out to be a prick, but a lot of you guys with 3-5 year old trucks who drive 5-12k miles/year are juuuuust starting to get into what seems to be the beginning of the problematic mileage. LOTS of guys first had issues between 25-40K and many will be coming OUT of warranty before issues emerge, or if they were just under warranty, they'll certainly be out if there's a 2nd issue 20k miles later (I'm not the only one). I drive quite a bit, so I hit issues in years 2 and 3 instead of years 4 and 7 if I drove 10k/year. Long story short, have a plan if you want to keep the truck for a while. Probably an extended warranty plan, lol.
