Was going back and forth with a buddy of mine the other day. Figured I’d post here to get some input so I can put this to rest and win $5… What is the difference between Ford’s 4x4 and Fx4 suspension? Not Ranger specific, just in general.

I believe the FX4 suspension is softer riding than base 4x4, but I'm no expert. I'm sure someone will be along to help you win this argument.

On the Ranger, the FX4 package comes standard with a locking rear differential, crawl control and selectable off-road “modes“, such as snow, sand, mud, rocks, etc. These modes alter shift points and throttle response for the condition you select. Plus the FX4 package has skid plates and its own branded shocks, but it’s not clear if they are significantly different than other 4x4’s or not. Plus, that beautiful bedside decal ?

Since you only mentioned suspension, for what I know tuned off road shocks & locking diff. (Locking diff is not even suspension)Then add all the other goodies with the FX4 package.

Slightly different shocks, thats all suspension wise. Did you win $5?

Fx4 package includes skid plates, locker(if available for model), terrain modes, some stickers, at time different seats/floor mats, an extra logo or 2.

only thing worth while is terrain modes and lockers tho.

What the others say. 4x4 just 4x4. Nothing special. Fx4, locker, terrain modes and skid plates.
Like having an xl and an xlt.

For most manufacturers(not just Ford), you will find the front Springs to be a different spring rate due to the weight difference.

Sometimes you may even have different shocks and struts for dampening due to different weight, but not always. Some manufacturers will use the same shock.

There are also certain packages like the FX4 from Ford or the Pro-4X from Nissan that use different Shocks and Struts all around(for example using Bilstein 4600 over factory twin tube shocks and struts).

The Ford Ranger FX4 package is an off-road focused upgrade to the standard 4x4, adding features like an off-road tuned suspension, skid plates, and an electronic locking rear differential, while 4x4 simply indicates a vehicle with four-wheel drive. The FX4 shocks and suspension components are softer which help improve the ride quality and handling of the vehicle

I love how most replying are only focusing on the FX4 package not not the difference of 2WD to 4WD

My XLT did too. FX4 people shouldn’t feel too special. Except that super bad ass sticker.
My 2020 SCab Sport has the locker too. I added the TM button and updated Forscan to get closer to the FX4 stuff. It is good 'nuff for me.

Does sand mode really disable traction control? Because I would used it daily!
