Should I be worried about the metal on my differential drain plug?

The shape makes me think they’re part of an outer bearing race. Combined with the noises you’re hearing, I’d get to the dealer as soon as you can if you’re still under warranty.

No transmission issues. This was in the rear differential.
Well I’m a dumb dumb anyway ? differential, transfer case, transmission, it’s all transmission to me.. now I’m really curious, because I’m doing the rear diff to swap the cover…. Might just be me silly enough to do this, but have you tried cleaning them off and seeing if they fit together at all. (Although they do very much look pretty munched.)… silver lining tho, the rear differential and rear axles is less expensive than a transmission if no longer covered right?

All good, I guess we are all expecting threads about transmission issues at this point lol

I'll see if they piece together when I get home today. They're really light gauge metal.

What ever it is I’m sure the transmission caused it ?

maybe, they don't look like they're shaped right to be a part of that, though. Wouldn't it be making god awful noises if it were a bearing? I drove it about 800 miles from Friday-Sunday with no issues. Changed rear dif oil when I got home yesterday evening. Drove it 43 miles to work this morning with no issues.
You’ll probably have to pull the rear cover, clean everything out with brake cleaner and get a good look inside to see what’s going on. Or if you’re under warranty yet get it to the dealer.

Yeah the more I look at it the more I think it's part of a bearing. It's been at the dealership since Wednesday. Hoping to hear something today.

Just got the call a few hours ago. They said pretty much the whole rear end is going to have to get replaced. Something about a friction modifier. I've got a Friday buzz so I was really chill and just said thanks instead of asking questions.

Really want to hear more about this "friction modifier" thing. Normally that is only "required" for a LDS. But, having it is not an issue for a open or locking differential.

Yeah, I read where using a friction modifier with a regular non-limited slip would do more harm than good....when I changed the lube on my non-slip earlier this year I googled info about using some thinking it would be great, but everything I read said no-no.

Sounds like a "fictional" modifier to me, I've always done nearly 100% of my own servicing but when I owned Saabs they generally needed a good deal of warranty work and since I'm easily entertained I'd make a habit of asking why something failed and get some pretty outlandish answers, but I think it's incumbent on service people to provide some sort of answer, even if it's total bs. Wouldn't be surprised if the dealership people try to outdo each other to see who comes up with the most absurd failure reason of the day.

No friction modifier for Ranger

For 06-09 Mustang GT, yes. Thought it was interesting to purchase and add that stuff when changing differential oil. It had a LSD unlike the Ranger's locker
