I went back to using a ford ranger after 3 years of not using a pickup for work.

Ranger 2023 (T9) has so many differences compared to the T6, T7 version that I used to own

Starting with the front passenger seat storage compartment. I have a few questions:

1. I don't know what the red circled part (as shown in the picture) is for? Is it to install a lock for this storage compartment? If so, does anyone know the part number for this lock? (My car is manufactured by Ford Vietnam - exclusively for the Vietnamese market)

2. I need this storage compartment to open gently (must have a damper) instead of it falling down hard when opened. I tried to remove it, it has a latch waiting to install the damper (attached picture). So does anyone know what this spare part number is and where to buy it? Please help me?

3. Under the storage compartment on the dashboard, I see a power cord (marked with a green X). I wonder what device this power cord supplies? Can anyone help me?

Looking forward to hearing from fellow Ranger T9 owners

Thanks !
Regards

We call that the glove box in the states. I don't know the part #, but this is it.

BTW, you can open the glove box, and while fully opened put your hands on either side of the box nearest the dashboard and squeeze the sides in, that will allow you to lower the box all the way open. Back there is where the cabin filter is located.

A similar cover/plug exists in the glove box of the NA 5G Ranger…

IMG_4834.jpeg

In other vehicles I’ve owned, a button for an electronic fuel door latch was placed in the glove box. No such option exists for our Rangers but Ford may have planned for one originally, decided late in the game to not include one, and found it cheaper to design a “plug” for that space instead of redesigning the panel, wiring harness, etc. ?‍♂ It might be why there’s an unused connector there. Totally just guessing.

Anyone else have any thoughts on what it might be for?

FYI - the glove box damper cable has to be disconnected to change the cabin air filter - ideally, every oil change. Reconnecting it can be a pain and technicians might simply leave it disconnected if they’re performing the service. Be careful what you wish for.

Don't know exactly when Ford deleted that stupid glove box damper, but my 2021 Lariat does not have it....mine is simply squeeze the sides in to lower it.
The OP has a 2023, so it may not have the box damper.

Oh great, I've thought about the missing (decontented) glovebox damper ever since I got Soupie, but now I no longer have the excuse of needing to look up the part number or where to get it.

I suppose that it was always inevitable after installing the tailgate damper. The glove box is getting too hard for me to use.

Oh boy, another upgrade for Soupie! =p

And @Natuan6780 for the lock, in the US that's part of the latch. I can't tell from your pics if yours has this release latch and if it doesn't have a key. I could see Ford making a latch without a locking mechanism.

I finally discovered to NOT try to crawl on your back to connect the damper cable. If you reach up to the right of the glove box, you can feel the 'hook'. Grab the damper cable and then pull it down and find the hook by feel and loop it on. Use the force.

You see, I managed but I was using Braille and a bit of cursing - next time, I’ll listen for “Let go, Duke”.

My 2021 doesn't have a glove box damper either. When you pull the latch....it just falls open about halfway... retaining tabs keep it from opening further. You must squeeze the box sides together to lower it further...to access the cabin air filter.

thanks !

It's sad with Ford Vietnam. These two accessories (glove box shock absorber and box lock) were both cut by the company to reduce product costs.

The strategy of OneFord all the world more than 10 years ago is now a thing of the past.

It's too bad you can't get a hold of a junked US Ranger to compare side-by-side. It's too much to hope for that the entire glovebox door would be interchangeable.

I don't know anything about non-US Rangers but I think the Australian ones have some compatibility with Mazda trucks. I know the Ranger came from Mazda way back, but in Australian videos I watch for mods, some are directly interchangeable with Mazda.

Do you have a latch at all similar to my pic? I saw a US latch assembly somewhere online. It comes out as a unit.

How about the option of the locking center console "vault"?

Wow - our glove box dampers couldn’t be more different. Ours have a white cylinder with a cord coming out one end. The cylinder mounts inside the dash and the cord attaches to a hole in a tab on the top of the glove box.

Using this type of shock absorber will make it easier to remove the glove box than my set. But the cost for it is many times greater so I do not choose it.
