Most people know that I tend to keep my eye on what the aftermarket is doing with 10R80's in hopes of helping people at least try and stretch the life of their trans a little longer.

When the aftermarket came out with upgraded valves for the valve body to address wear, it is pretty safe to assume that wear is an issue, so clean fluid is a must, and I've experimented with Lubegard Platinum as an additive to hopefully help fend off wear in my VB. Turns out it also appears to work decently to unstick VB's that are already starting to stick.

That's not the point of the post.

Within the last few weeks, Sonnax has developed and released a modification to save the CDF drum and prevent it from being an issue.

Now, I'm not recommending you go tear into your trans and apply the kit, but if you have a failing transmission AND you have a transmission guy you trust, AND you are out of warranty, there looks to be hope.

If I had the time, and the trans guy, I'd have mine pulled and modded. No affiliation BTW, just something I noticed doing my usual evening browsing.

I see Sonnax frequently mentioned as a problem solver and this seems like another great solution.

Nexgen Diesel has a drop-in complete replacement for the CDF assembly that doesn't require reprogramming for about three grand. They call it the Cherry Bomb.

Nice find.

I'm guessing this applies solely to 2019-mid 2022 Rangers? As I thought I understood it, Ford fixed this issue for mid-2022 and later?

They make the Cherry Bomb sound really easy to do.

That’s correct. Per the TSB vehicles built on or after 8-16-22 have the updated.

But if you have a 4x4 you can get a new updated complete transmission with a warranty from Ford for about the same money.

Why is it only for the 4x4? What about folks with rear wheel drive? We're chopped liver? We don"t count I guess!

The new transmission from Ford for the 4x2 is substantially more money than the 4x4 one. The kit works for both transmissions. I was just comparing pricing between the kit and the 4x4 new transmission.

Yup, it’s like a $1500 difference! It’s got to be a popularity thing.

Interesting offering, but if I'm taking the transmission out of the truck and far enough apart to get the CDF drum out of the transmission, I don't know why you wouldn't just install the revised CDF drum from Ford. The revised part isnt that expensive all things considered, the cost is in the labor and tools to get the CDF drum in and out..

Provided you could get one from Ford. One of those things that will probably be on permanent backorder.

I suspect the aftermarket will be stepping up with a revised drum soon though.

Well, the drum part number JR3Z-7H351-B referenced in the TSB is only $142 and looks to be available aside from the part system issues going on now.
Looks like Suncoast offers them too, but is charging $500 a piece.

People rag on these 10 speeds , and mine has been sketchy since day one and I have not shut up about it , but , I know the potential is there , mine will go through the gears like a dream sometimes and I love it ?, other times , not so much , but I am convinced that one day it will be great because I have seen glimpses of it from time to time ...
