First off, I LOVE my tremor and have been documenting the maintenance and mods since day 1

https://www.ranger5g.com/forum/threads/loving-my-new-lariat-tremor-modding-it-up-already.16842/

and even decided it was "almost as good" as the new Ranger Raptor after I test drove one

https://www.ranger5g.com/forum/threads/i-test-drove-a-ranger-raptor-yesterday.29735/

but, I think I jinxed myself......I was driving home from a jobsite this past Thursday afternoon on the local toll road (133 fwy southbound) going slightly/moderately uphill at about 75+ in sport mode when all of a sudden it hesitated a little bit, started to act "funny" and shift rough and "popped" out of gear. I immediately got over to the far right lane, eased off the gas to slow down and drove carefully to try to make it home which was about 5 miles. It was fumbling through a couple of gears and white smoke was definitely visible in the rear view mirror coming from my truck. I exited the freeway and came to a stop and was praying it would get me home and it started from a dead stop but not without fumbling through the gears. 2 minutes later I was home and parked it overnight in a guest spot in my condo complex as I was running late for my gym work out with my son.

The next morning (Friday) I called the dealership and made an appointment and also called AAA to tow it in as I didn't want to drive it the 5-6 miles to the dealership. I did however take it around the block to see if it was just a "fluke" but it was still fumbling through the gears and it had a heavy trans fluid smell. When the AAA driver put it on the flatbed it was obvious that it has some transmission problem as it was dripping fluid and the whole back half underside was covered in trans fluid. The white smoke was the fluid dripping on the hot exhaust and nothing engine related.

I didn't hear anything from the dealership today (Saturday) so I decided to go down there and see what was going on. Turns out the tow truck driver just dropped it off and no one at the dealership "checked it in" so it wasn't even in the system yet. The service adviser, Jack, was super nice and said he'd have the transmission tech look at it on Monday and get back to me. I told him how "disappointed" I was because the truck has been great up until then and only has 30,526 miles and thank goodness I wasn't on my way to Vegas in the middle of nowhere in 115 heat!

I talked to Jack a little bit and also chatted with a sales guy named Tim who also had a Lariat Tremor but his was a 2022. We chatted a while about our trucks and even compared them to the new Ranger Raptor.......the whole time I was getting good vibes from everyone that it would be under warranty (It better damn should be!) and that probably it would get a new (revised) transmission instead of just rebuilding my current one. I'm just speculating that the trans is bad based on what I experienced and just hope I don't get the run around or some lame BS excuse why it isn't covered. I need my truck for work and this sucks and my anxiety is through the roof waiting to hear the diagnoses but I'm sure they want it fixed under warranty with a new trans just as much as I do!...or at least I hope!!

The next couple of days of waiting is going to kill me!

Wow Bill sorry to hear you're having to go through this. Luckily it sounds like you have a really good dealership/service adviser which is rare today so that should be half your battle right there. I see no reason it shouldn't be covered under warranty and it sounds like you're in good hands so I wouldn't worry/stress to much. Yeah I know easier said then done because I'd be climbing the walls right now. ? Good luck!

It has a Ford Performance Tune but that should not cause it to crap out and I think the dealer doesn't even care or at least I hope so that it has the tune.......and yes, I'm kinda worrying myself to death and it's driving me nuts......I've even been weighing my options in my head as if they don't warranty it..... but I need to just calm down and let them do their job and I hope they just replace it versus rebuilding/repairing it.......but it sucks at just over 30,000 miles and it's a work truck as I own a roofing company and need my truck to haul a little giant folding ladder and roofing samples and brochures......I don't want to pull up in my weekend car which is a Porsche as that sends the wrong message to the potential customer!!.....that's also why I didn't want the Raptor.......want to look professional without looking super expensive!...LOL

More importantly......one of the sales guys said if they replace it, it will be the newer revised tranny whatever that means.....he indicated the older trans had "issues"...which we all know about!

and I purposely stayed a while and chatted with the Jack the service advisor and a couple other guys their just to build a "friendship" if you will to make nice so that they actually care about me and will work their best to get it replaced with a new one.......kinda like a politician working the crowd to get what he wants......I'll do whatever it takes at this point to get it replaced under warranty.......maybe I'm over thinking it but at 30,000 miles it just seems so fricking lame!!!......I know I read about trans issue on here and some of them going bad early but NOT this early at 30,000 miles.....at least I don't recall......

My 2022 Tremor with 17,800 miles is going in Monday for transmission replacement. Already had the reflash and valve body replacement. I have had consistent 3-4-5 shifting issues but nothing like what you’re describing. Have you had any transmission maintenance done on yours? ( fluid / filter change, etc)

The symptoms you are describing match what others on this forum have experienced with a transmission being overfilled. That’s why I asked if anything had been done fluid wise. It doesn’t take much and in the right circumstances it will push fluid out the top vent and do what you’ve described. Not saying that this is your issue but it’s something to look at.

I haven't seen or heard from another member on here saying that they had tranny issues based on it being overfilled but then again I just browse through here and don't dwell on it too much. I certainly hope that wasn't the case with mine and I know my trusted mechanic has been in business for over 30 years and I have taken all my vehicles to him over the years so I doubt it was overfilled. And I drive it like I stole it most of the time and the pan and fluid exchange was done about 5,000 miles ago and you'd think it would have caused a problem way before now if it was overfilled.......but I'm no expert!!.....now I'm even more nervous about it getting fixed under warranty....my fricking anxiety issues are kicking in big time!!

I did look up the trans online and see that a new one costs between $2,500 & $3,000 plus labor of course......I need my truck and I'm playing out every scenario in my head cause that's how I am and it sucks to overthink this but it's a major deal and I need my truck for work! I'm 99.99% sure it should be covered under warranty but worse case I'll just buy one and have my mechanic install it.....and of course call Ford customer care and scream bloody murder!!

is this the "latest" updated trans or is there a different part number for the newest version??

Type in “ overfilled “ in the search function. Setting the proper fluid level is tricky. Ask your mechanic specifically what procedure he did to set the fluid level. If it was overfilled then the dealer should refill to the correct level and your transmission should be ok. Could be an easy fix. The transmission part number will have all the updates.

I agree with the possibility of overfilling. You can drive the truck quite a while before you may see the issue, esp in winter. It is difficult to get the fluid hot enough to correctly set the fluid level.

To get an accurate fluid level reading, the fluid temperature must be between 206F - 215F.

During winter you may not see the fluid temps reach 200F, and if you check it then, the dipstick will read low.

It is very easy to overfill the 10R80 transmission.

I’m sure your 5/60,000 warranty should cover this. I just had my 2019 transmission rebuilt and upgraded with the TSB under extended warranty. You might also be able to get a rental/loaner.
