Last summer I towed 6500 miles (https://www.ranger5g.com/forum/threads/6464-miles-towing-7200lb-tt.25658/#post-588143) with my 7300lb TT. I'm at it again this year and will probably be closer to 8000 miles. I'll post an over view when its done. Leaving Salt Lake City headed east on I-80, a completely empty taco came flying up behind me just as we started ascending Parley's Canyon. For Those not familiar -

Elevation: 7050 feet at the top – 4920 feet at the bottom.

Length: 12 miles

Terrain: up to 4-6% grades, typically 6%

Taco passed on the left and got about one car length ahead but lost alot of speed trying to get up the hill. The trusty ranger only lost 5mph and the taco never could get away from me until we reached the top. That must have been very humbling for Toyotabro that his empty taco struggled as hard as my maxed out ranger to make it to the top.

People don't think elevation and forced induction be like it be... but it do

Been across I-80 east from outside Salt Lake to outside Chicago where we headed south back to Va,
Hit all the national parks out your way.
Where are you heading ???
If in the Va. area, let me know !!!

That 3.5 in the previous gen tacoma was a dog driving around the midwest, i can only imagine its poor performance at elevation in the mountains. My guess the new taco with the turbo 4 is much better.

I'll be staying out west. Just wandering all around. If I ever make it as far as VA I'll look you up.

I pulled 3800 lbs from N.Y to vail, co. in a 2006 Explorer 4x4 Eddie Bauer v6, only time I knew it was behind me was in the Flat nothing of Nebraska where the only thing you have to keep you company is your trailer and one AM radio station that only gives soy and corn prices every 5 min. LOL
climbing past 14k after Denver really was no big deal, I was averaging 12 to 14 mpg
God I loved that truck, the tranny gave out under my abuse at 283k :(

that truck also weighed 5100 lbs and got 20 to 22 mpg on average, and had a much better ride LOL

It's a big part of the reason there's a meaningful amount more drag racers at elevation that set up their race vehicles with forced induction than there is at sea level

Decreased density of atmosphere means fuck all when you have a system that's only job is to ensure your intake gets pressurized to whatever level you feel like ?

It's funny watching naturally aspirated folks drop their jaws on mountain passes though. Denver Metro area is like 20% less oxygen than sea level and that's 5,000 feet, multiple passes go up over 10k, 11k, etc ... there's a rule for it like every 2k feet is another 10%

You might be sitting on 350hp in Florida but you aren't on the switchbacks at 9k buddy ?

Oh man, brings back memories of my 90-something 5-speed manual Explorer. That thing was a beast and had a hilariously long shifter. Made me feel like I was driving a big rig. First gear would just spin tires since the thing was so bare bones it didn't weigh enough without a load.

that big ass shifter was a joke, I always wanted to cut it off and do something else LOL
that 2006 eddie bauer felt like a Caddy, it was 5100 lbs with me and the dog, it also had to much Brain and wouldnt let me spin, by the time you stomp the peddle it would just lock you in 4X4 and chip all 4 and grab and go LOL I wished sometime it would have let me play
it also for a 17 year old V6 truck it got 20 to 22 mpg same as my 4 cy now, you mean to tell me in 17 years no one could engineer in another mile or two it had a bigger tank I could get 500 miles per tank, and I got 283k out of it before the tranny blew, it felt nice because it had 4 wheel independent suspension, no rear Axle damn could that thing crawl rock and keep all 4 on the ground

You know the Ranger's GCWR over 7,000ft is only about 9875, right? If you have a failure and tow that much at that altitude warranty could be voided if they find it related.
