SO...I am curious...what would the chances be that I could have the same issue occurring with a different transmission? The adaptive shift smoothed out with no issues. Then today in traffic I accelerated and had a super hard shift and was holding at 9th gear when it should have gone into 10th. Also the crazy RPM swings that I was seeing on our trip to Florida.

This was touted as a Motorcraft transmission. And it is under warranty. I am going to drive it a bit close to the house this weekend to see what is happening. I do have an OBDLink EX and was going to try to do some data logging if I can figure it out. I haven't played with it nearly enough as I should have so if someone has any clues for me on if I can monitor pressures or some kind of parameters.

I am really not a happy camper right now. :(

Oh no.... I'd be so annoyed. Keep us posted

He came back, got a flea dip and a vet visit. :)

So one question on the transmission...is it possible it was overfilled by the shop? Would it have taken that long to puke? Secondly would the overfull state have caused the slam shift event?
Mine ran overfilled for a good long time before it heated up towing a trailer at 'high' speeds (+70 seems to be the point the trans starts picking up significant heat).

As for causing rough shifting. Absolutely. If the fluid overheated/foamed the valve timings will be all over the map. Perfectly reasonable that one valve might move in time while another is lagging and that could easily cause a bind/slipped shift/etc etc.

Prior to that it had been a gem. After that event, which was Sept 2023, it has been fine.

The Sonnax link seems to connect CDF drum failures to fluid levels. Not sure that's an absolute relationship but maybe an issue regardless. I recall some concern over the 10R80 being underfilled from the factory but I don't know if that is purely speculation or anecdotal rumor. It certainly could be a problem - and the inconvenience of properly checking the tranny fluid level is a huge reason to get the MBS dipstick!

I'd seen mention elsewhere of excess heat being an issue as well. Expansion and contraction of dissimilar metals and all that. Fluid level might well cause that. I know that I monitor temps now every time I drive and especially when towing and take steps to not let it go over 210. I feel that is a reasonable upper limit for it, even though I've seen people reporting as high as 225 in normal use.

So I asked this before on another thread....so I'll ask here. The work gets done.

What are the quality of parts that are being installed? Are they aftermarket and beefier generally? Are they Motorcraft and possibly compromised like the parts that came in the OEM transmission? What is the life expectancy of a reman/repaired transmission?

I find myself reminiscing about my old truck. 4R70 in my 2005 F150 had a full 250k before it started showing signs of slipping. I kick myself for selling that truck...a 4.6 and a 4 speed. Basically a taxicab with a truck bed and was reliable as anything I've ever had. :(

Well I get to answer my own question.

I'm heading home from work yesterday, normal traffic and ambient air temp here in SE Texas is about 82 degrees.

Starts revving high, then accel pedal has nada, then revving high, then nothing, then revving high, etc etc. I'm not freaking out anymore but I AM a bit angry. Get it over to the slow lanes just in case. Make it home okay.

Tailgate has a nice coating. :(
Old Blue heading back to the shop. The work was done at 82,000 approx and now has 91,000...all done in April. We aren't seeing any kind of "RELEARN" here I am thinking. I just won the damn bad-luck lotto.

I'll be climbing under it prior to going to find and take pics of any kind of tags/numbers - I have no faith anymore. :(

Update -

shop came back with a report that the wiring harness is leaking and one is on order.

I am thinking more about selling and getting a 2015 F150 with a ZF and a 5.0. :(

Did you ever figure out exactly what transmission they put in your truck? ( New, Motorcraft reman, other brand reman or ???)

I am guessing that there is a bulkhead connector for the electrical harness?

As for if the trans was new or reman I BELIEVE it was new?

here are some pics I took prior to taking it back to the shop so maybe you fine folks can give me the good or bad. ALLEGEDLY letters in the solenoid strategy means its a new build but that is google talking - so not sure.

It’s most likely a reman based on the date code of “19196” ( june 19 2019) on the main tag. For example the date code for my new transmission installed on June 26th 2024 has the date code of “24156” or June 16th 2024. My original transmission hade a date code from February of 2022 ( can’t remember exact day number) and truck was built in 03/2022.

So the issue was an o-ring sealing the wiring harness per the shop.

I decided to look over the manual and it appears to be this?

Initially it feels fine. Fingers crossed.

I will likely be keeping a chicken foot in the truck just in case.

Well, now I'm looking at the cost to build out my transmission service tools for this truck.... (the one tool shown in your post is over $300). Nearly $5k in specialty tools.
