I'm looking to improve mpg on my 2wd '21 XLT (i've posted on here about its terrible 18 mpg highway mileage, and tried a dozen things to fix it with all your help, with no success)

Is there an aftermarket exhaust / downpipe combo that's just as quiet as stock? I live in a quiet neighborhood, and also generally just don't like the sound of a loud exhaust :D
I might also be using the wrong terms...i'm just learning about exhausts for the first time...

I read some threads like this one that talks about borla and magnaflow, and downpipes in this thread, but it wasn't clear what the conclusions were for what's the best combination for increasing mpg while keeping stock nois.

I don't think any aftermarket exhaust will be as quiet as stock simply because the exhaust company will want you to HEAR what you just paid for.

I've always heard that replacement shocks are usually a bit firmer than stock so that people won't think thye wasted their money on new shocks that weren't actually needed.

I will say that the MBRP cat back exhaust is NOT as quiet as stock.

Too noisy. Looking for ways now to quiet it down.

The Gibson dual exhaust is very quiet for a performance exhaust. I have to turn the radio down to hear it. If you do a Search you will find a video of it that another member posted. It's very quiet for aftermarket.

Not to get into ANOTHER mpg thread, but are you really getting 18 on the highway? What are you getting in the city then? I have seen about 20 city - 24 to 28 on the highway. I am not sure exhaust would affect your MPG in a noticeable way.

Sadly yes. This is just one thread here that I posted that gives all the details. The thread is long, but most of the info is in the 1st page or so as ppl asked more questions.
I'm desperate to improve mpg because it's so bad, and such an outlier compared with other members' experiences.

I read that a new tailpipe/exhaust may help mpg, so thought i'd ask!

24 to 28 on the highway.
I've never even seen 20 on the highway, even with tailwinds... :(

FX2 with 18mpg?! That's not right...I get 18mpg with my FX4 and big fat 285s shit sticking out into the wind everywhere...

That said, no aftermarket exhaust is going to help with mpg...my MBRP is very quiet...almost like stock at low speeds...the start up is nice low but not loud rumble...after that, I don't hear it at all...

So please go ahead and give us all the details about your truck in its current state. What have you added? What have you changed? What is your current tire pressure? What tires are you running? Got any aftermarket wheels or still running factory?

Yes these things will matter and I need to know

I'm not going to a post that may not be up to date.
I see, yeah good to check; the configuration mentioned in the linked thread is up to date, so the post is the best place to get the info.
The thread includes all the things I checked in response to peoples' help, but I didn't change anything configuration-wise since then.

Bigger exhaust isn't going to help fuel mileage, if you're looking for mileage my guess is that you're not running WOT, and if that's the case a stock exhaust will provide enough flow to run the engine efficiently. I installed a 3" downpipe and exhaust and the mileage dropped to 14-15mpg, all due to my right foot position.

I have the same experience. Brought the truck home from the dealer and best I could get was 18 mpg highway and closer to 14-15 city on a stock truck. So I went to C rated 265/70/17 KO2s and lifted the truck to level it and put a ford performance grill on. Still get 14-15 city and 18 highway. I’m running the bigger tires at 37 cold and only use 91 octane. I’m not a lead foot but I don’t like to wait around off the line either. I’m in a really hilly area and most my driving is around town very stop and go so even when I do short stints on the highway it doesn’t impact the mileage significantly. I’ve resigned to the fact that my truck doesn’t sip gas. But it pisses me off.
