Hey guys, been a while for me since posting. Hope you are all well, no new upgrades or anything but I have 30k miles and about to get oil change. A few thousand miles ago the service center at my dealer said I needed new break pads/calipers and rotors done. It’s gonna cost around $800.
Is this normal? In the past (with vehicles I didn’t love as much) I usually just replaced pads and called it a day.

30k miles (mostlycity) and a full break job when I have never had any issues seem like a normal thing to you?

Also, are there any aftermarket pads & calipers (that look fresh from the outside) available for this truck, and what would you recommend?

Thanks, I’m not a huge car/truck guy so any information you provide is well appreciated, especially when I am about deal with the scummy Ford dealer.

And here’s a recent pic of the truck for all you voyeurs. Peace!

That’s odd, I usually get 80-120k on a set of front and rears, pretty much on everything I’ve owned. But I am a highway driver…and believe that repeated stops heat up the brakes and rotors (shorter life). It may be normal for a city driver.

Mine still looked good and beefy at the 25k change. Tire shop didn't say anything either and they are a bit spaztic about OMG IT MUST BE CHANGED THE NOW!. For sure no wobble under breaking; so rotors seem good and healthy as well.

Pretty sure I am going to need rear pads first. I keep TC on most of the time and with the tune I think that system kicks in a bit earlier than the light showing its working. So, yeah - the pads out back probably hate me.

Why did yours go at 30? No idea, but if you have FORscan I would do the bleed thing if you have not already. Not sure if that would help, but it does help with pedal feel for sure.

Thanks for the picture, nice looking truck. As for the brakes, I would certainly get a second opinion if you can't remove the wheels and check for yourself.

Rangers come factory with organic pads that wear faster but are easy on the rotors.
The OE pads are ceramic.

Unless you've been entering your truck in NASCAR races, it's HIGHLY unlikely that you need pads, rotors, and calipers. At 30k I seriously doubt you even need pads. If you're pads were on their last few mm of material you would be able to hear the wear indicators when you stop.

I don't even know how they could quote that job for $800. Pad, rotor, and caliper replacement with OE parts on all 4 corners would easily be over $1k just in parts.

Does the truck show any weird behaviors during braking?

Pads i could see even if premature, but no way the calipers are bad if you can't feel any weirdness other rhan softness.

Did they give you a reason why the calipers need replaced?

Sounds like a money-grab. Get a second opinion.

To this day I don' t know why, but my wifes 2012 Fusion needed rear brakes about every 35-40 k miles. Her Focus made it to about 50 k for frt & rear pads . I told them to replace rotors also. It seems to me like our rear pad life isn't nearly as long as drum style on the rears used to be. Good example, my 88 f150 had 91 k on it when I installed frt pads. The rear shoes had 117k on it when I traded it and the shoes were @ 1/3 life still. Truck was also a 5 speed, didn't coast forever like these newer vehicles do.

There has been a fair amount of evidence that Traction Control can/may affect the rear brake life quite significantly. It isn't like the old days where the rears got used very little. I'm at 40k now and all seems good - I'm due for an oil change and rotation soon - I'll check all 4 corners then, but last time I checked they all looked good.

For the OP - it does sound quite excessive - I'd get a second opinion as others have said. Pads maybe, rotors possibly, but calipers on all 4 corners?

Just adding a reference point: I just imported my 19 Ranger into Canada and had to have it inspected in the process. To my surprise my rears were a 2mm and needing replaced (along with rotors), fronts were at 7mm and OK.

Truck is at 56k miles. About 45k of those are interstate miles in ~30miles increments.

I would not use aftermarket brake parts. Ford makes perfectly fine parts that in my experience last a long time. No way you need calipers at 30k.

It was just the front, the rears they say are just fine. I have been listening and I haven’t been hearing squeaking or anything, so I’ll get a second opinion for sure. We do have 6 months of winter here so there is a fair amount of breaking and when it’s not winter I like to drive sort of “fun” but like you all said, it seems excessive to have to do this on a rig that is only 3 years old.
Thanks for the advice.

Brake pads can be used up after a day session on a race track...I drive like a new set of pad/rotors cost a million dollars and they're still good at 110,000 miles...

Around 50K the dealer said I needed pads & rotors. Just got a 2nd opinion from a local shop. They said I’m close to needing pads but rotors are totally fine & dealer is full of it on that. Went ahead & had them put new pads on all 4.

@Strobes I just had my rear pads & rotors replaced at 31K. I realize you clarified it’s your front set with issue. Though there has been a lot of mentions on this forum regarding the rear brakes needing replacement early. This is because Ford chose thinner pads and a less beefy rear setup. I haven’t seen any people complaining about the front setup going early. $800 for calipers, pads and rotors installed is actually very reasonable.
