As they say, when you change your tires over from winter to summer tires and vice versa, you should re-torque your lug nuts at 50 miles....makes you wonder why this isnt a requirement or a strong suggestion to do with new vehicles....afterall, its no different of a process with the same possible result
I've never even heard of that, nor done it. I do my own tire rotations, and have done for 25+ years on many vehicles and not once has there been a torque issue with them. Its good practice to double check them if someone else did the work (tire shop etc) for sure.

Then you have never read the manual:

Wheel Lug Nut Torque Specifications
WARNING
WARNING: When you install a wheel, always remove any corrosion, dirt or foreign materials present on the mounting surfaces of the wheel or the surface of the wheel hub, brake drum or brake disc that contacts the wheel. Make sure to secure any fasteners that attach the rotor to the hub so they do not interfere with the mounting surfaces of the wheel. Installing wheels without correct metal-to-metal contact at the wheel mounting surfaces can cause the wheel nuts to loosen and the wheel to come off while your vehicle is in motion, resulting in loss of vehicle control, personal injury or death.

Bolt Size
lb.ft (Nm)1
M12 x 1.5
100 lb.ft (135 Nm)

1Torque specifications are for nut and bolt threads free of dirt and rust. Use only our recommended replacement fasteners.
Retighten the lug nuts to the specified torque within 100 miles (160 kilometers) after any wheel disturbance, such as tire rotation, changing a flat tire or wheel removal.

That may be in this vehicles manual. I havent had it long enough to need to look for that. It is definitely not in the manual for the last few vehicles I've had. It just says to check them at lubrication intervals (which is when I do the rotation anyway).

It is, but who actually does that? Fast Lane rotates my tires at oil changes. I don't retorque after 100 miles, and I bet very few do.

It's likely a CYA for manufacturers, first place I saw it was on my 5th wheel. Checked them a few times and never found an issue. Have never done it on any vehicle for the past 50 years and lost no wheels.

Loose wheels happen often enough in Ontario that the OPP is constantly posting about it on Twitter.
Private vehicles and commercial vehicles are included in their many posts on the subject

I've never been struck by lightening, nor have I ever won the lottery, but are we to deny that neither will happen for me?
With your last statement, perhaps its good practice that someone double checks your work too? We can't say for certain that your 25 yrs of "luck" is going to run out soon or not.

More like 25yrs of doing it correctly so it doesnt need to be redone after a few miles. In any case, I'm not advocating that people dont check it, especially if someone else was the last person to touch them. I've just never heard of that being a requirement or even listed in a manual before.

I've only seen wheels come off a truck a few times IRL. And they all were oversized tires on a 4x4 with obvious offsets or wheel spacers.

I guess that I am an odd ball because I always check the lug nuts after each time a tire is removed.

When the dealer services my vehicle and rotates the tires, then I will recheck as soon as I get home.

If I rotate the tires myself or remove a shell for any reason at home, then I will torque to specs, drive at least 5-10 miles and then recheck the lug nuts.

And yes I have found lug nuts that were not at the proper torque on occasion no matter who torqued them down. I have seen it happen more with aluminum rims versus steel rims.
