Oh yeah......gate security are serious probly more now than they were back in '90-'91. Those Abrams will hurt ya! Was still cool to pick up our radio station 1/2-way across the country......made me feel a bit closer to home!
It was 1991 when I went through - was that you?

Not at the gate.........I was up in the hills.........Area 63...........about 15 miles inland. However.....we did get liberty and went to the beach......nah......I wouldn't have been in uniform!

yep! XERB out of TJ Mexico...listened to the X quite a bit...in the day.

best,
Phil
IIRC, Am stations were restricted to 50,000 Watts of power in the USA but in Tijuana, there were no such restrictions and XERB blasted out with more power than USA stations meaning "The X" could be heard way North of the Mexican Boarder....

Best,
Phil

I was a north Dade County...Norland High School. Had a Pizza Palace Drive In on 27 th ave, Scotties on Collins Ave on the beach. Lum's cooked in beer hot dogs, Nathans on the causway out to Miami Beach and the 79th street causway.
Double screen Golden Glades Drive In on NW 37 ave and the Palmetto Xway.
Back then Homestead was a rural farming town. There was actually a 25-30 mile green belt between Homestead and South Miami (Dadeland). Nothing upscale about Homestead at all. We'd go north via Old Cutler Road to occasionally visit Coconut Grove, Tahiti Beach, Crandon Park Zoo via Rickenbacker Causeway on Key Biscayne, etc. Once in a blue moon we'd make it up to MacArthur Causeway to Miami Beach, but we spent most of our time in south Biscayne Bay around Elliott Key or in the Everglades on swamp buggies or boats further south.

A lot of memories. It was a very good pl;ace to grow up - not so much now.

We had a DriveIn theater right down the street from Harris Field on the corner of Kings Hwy and Old Dixie Hwy. South Dade HS played Palmetto, North Miami, Coral Park, Coral Gables (rich kids), Key West, and I think Norland as well.

I'm guessing (it is just a guess) the electric motor in a hybrid isn't big enough to produce enough interference. Our cmax hybrid AM radio works as well.
Hybrid electric motors are fairly small and are supplemental, older early HID ignitor ballasts caused more radio interference than Hybrid electric motors until better cases were developed.

I read somewhere that many electric vehicles don't have AM because it interferes with the car. That likely contributed to removing AM from ICE vehicles as well, as part of Ford's part simplifying plan.

Edit... https://www.forbes.com/sites/dalebu...-infringing-on-iconic-medium/?sh=6c923b931477
I have some specific training in the radio communications field. The problem is not the radio interfering with the car, it's that the car's high-power electronics produces a lot of electromagnetic interference that AM radios are sensitive to. The car's electronic environment interferes with AM radio reception.
In order to keep a clean electrical environment and ensure a reliable signal, they have to spend more design effort (more money) on adequate EM shielding of the power electronics. So they lose the AM radio, they can go with cheaper filtering and shielding.

I'm guessing this has something to do with it:

https://www.autoweek.com/news/a42025199/will-electric-cars-kill-am-radio/

Apparently electric motors produce interference for AM radio.
Yep. Specifically the high-frequency switching of high-current circuits to modulate the power. The way the battery power is applied to the motors is to switch the power on and off very rapidly (thousands of times per second), and control power delivery by governing how long each "power pulse" lasts. This is called pulse width modulation, and the use of this technique turns the motor circuit into a very powerful wide-band (lots of harmonics) radio transmitter, so unless significant effort is expended on shielding and other EM interference control methods, an AM radio signal can be unusable in the immediate vicinity of these circuits.

My Fusion Hybrid didn't interfere with the AM radio. So it's sorta possible that it wouldn't be an issue.
There is extra design work involved. Shielding, filtering, even modulation frequency selection to a certain extent. It can be done, (obviously), but it costs more to do. So they want to eliminate this expense, and it is of no concern to them that this will make us all more dependent on (controllable and trackable) point-to-point communication options (Internet / cell network / satellite radio) vs lower frequency / long-range mass broadcast communications.

I took it upon myself when I took possession of my truck to just rip the factory radio completely out and installed a trusty crystal radio.

Absolutely no bass but... take that ford!

Ahhhh, Yessss.......AM Radio....Wolfman Jack, Chicken Man ( He's Everywhere He's Everywhere), and Miami Fla WQAM's Rick Shaw Friday and Saturday Night Sign Off with Good Night My Love...
Those were good times !!!
KTCR "The Mighty 690" AM Minneapolis MN Country & Western format. they signed off every evening with "Blue Shadows on the Trail by the Sons of the Pioneers. I listened on my Lloyds 6 transistor radio. Late night when the Ionosphere was favorable, I could sometimes get an X--- something station out of Mexico, and KAAY Little Rock. Can't forget WLS 890 Chicago which was a clear channel Top 40 format. They played more R & B/soul rock than the Pat Boone-ish stations in the Twin Cities.

So did the points and spark plugs on some cars without shielded distributor covers and/or resistor plugs. You could set the radio dial in-between stations and get an "audio tach" - interference that rose and fell with rpm.
Yeah, I've experienced that - but it sounds like the electric motors is quite a bit worse and the manufacturers don't want to spend the $$$ to fix it.
