There is extra design work involved. Shielding, filtering, even modulation frequency selection to a certain extent. It can be done, (obviously), but it costs more to do. So they want to eliminate this expense, and it is of no concern to them that this will make us all more dependent on (controllable and trackable) point-to-point communication options (Internet / cell network / satellite radio) vs lower frequency / long-range mass broadcast communications.
Question to all, when was the last time you listened to AM or even FM radio at home?

I don't own an am or fm receiver in my home any more. the last was my clock radio that died during a power surge in dec. even then it's radio functions hadn't been turned on or set in 10 years previous to that.

as for radio, I live in such an area that I have to change stations every 5-10 miles any ways so we switched to satellite radio for the vehicles.

don't own an over the air tv antenna either.(techincally there is one attached to my camper. I can't get it to pull a signal) don't get a lot of signal for it. and that is 75 miles outside of Boston.

radio was killed by playing the same boring 40 songs over and over again. and Talk radio is for morons who don't want to make an informed opinion on their own but sound like it.(most podcasts are the same way)

Can't speak for others, but the last time I was really on FM radio was last year after installing a radio in my 1993 Pathfinder (the old one was dieing). Had to test out the distance and it was ok. After that I was back on XM!!

Probably around the turn of the century when I had a boombox in my room and was a teenager. Used to never miss an episode of Car Talk. "And even though people ask for their money back when we say it - this is NPR."

I listen to both when driving long distance, and I prefer AM talk radio as it has a larger broadcast range at night - when I prefer to travel. It is always something different and keeps me alert.

I'm not really sure what or why they are doing it. I truely can't imagine the electronics to support AM would add $1 to the cost. And, there are still AM stations. Doesn't really matter if I haven't listened to AM for 40 years, someone else might.

I don't know. What's next, no more CD or Cassette players? Oh, wait.

I don't listen to FM at home any longer but I do throw sports talk or political talk on if I'm off.

I hate streaming live programing. I'm a flipper. It pissed me off during Thurs night football on Amazon I couldn't flip around during time outs an half time. Leaving the app an going back sucks.

I have the XM app I listen to occasionally in the work car if the radio hosts I like are on vacation.

Guess I'm an old grumpy creature of habit

I use AM as a back up if I can't get sports on FM usually I can find an AM sports channel that will broadcast a NASCAR race or a game.
