We grew up very poor. 5 kids under 10. Father (son of a sharecropper was the oldest of 14 kids) had a 7th grade education, Mom made to 10th. He worked 3 jobs, all low skill except for the USAF. Joined up at 16 just after WWII (he lied about his age)

I remember spam cut into 1/4" squares, and boiled in canned water down tomato soup with pasta shells. That was dinner!

Sounds like great parents. They provided for you with hard work.

We ate alot of spam also........we ate what mom and dad provided. Wasn't steak but we pretended it was. Folks worked hard every day for meager income. We never questioned what we were having to eat but rather happy it was enough!

I grew up poor and ate a lot of cows tongue. Mom would get them almost free from the local butcher and boil up a big one on Sunday. Then ate it most of the week ?. Always had something on the table and had to eat what was offered or go hungry.

They were wonderful parents, did they best they could, and raised us well. We were happy. Every Saturday I would go with him to the local Savings and Loan to clean it up. He'd do the inside while I picked up the litter in the acre yard surrounding the building. Then we'd wash the big plate glass windows. I'd wet them down, and he would follow behind using the squeegee to clean them up.

They took us to church every Sunday and Sunday night and again on Wed night for prayer meeting. That church family became our extended family. All Uncles and Aunts, and Grandpa's and Grandma's everywhere.

I had a good childhood. Spam and all. I have not had Spam since I left home. Mentioning it brought back a flood of memories.

Are we talking about stoves, egg prices, or Greta yet?

Here's what Kate made us last night - a pretty close copy of a New Orleans muffaletta (at least to what I remember when I was 12). She made a really nice olive salad and vinaigrette for the bread and that's still making me salivate as I type it!

Boy, am I glad I'm not a vegan! =D

That made me hungry. I ran down in the basement and picked a batch of lettuce to put on my leftover spam sandwich. Oh crap I checked the fridge and my Spam was gone. Asked my wife if she ate it and was told she tossed it in the garbage. Well guess I will just make a wish sandwich with lettuce now.

I'm not vegan either but nothing else left in the fridge and I wish I had a stack of meat like you.

Cow tongues used to be such a common thing. I remember eating it as well, especially tongue sandwiches.

Now, if your a sensitive sort, stop reading now.

Growing up I'd often spend summers in Michigan (my grandmother had a 300 acre farm) and it was common, where we were near Marcellus, to eat horse! Inexpensive and "normal" back then (it wasn't rationed during WWII).

Then they boiled the bones to make gelatin for jello.

I would bring tongue sandwiches to school for lunch and everybody thought I was weird for eating them. They didn't know what they were missing ?.

You know, I don't remember anything bad about tongue. It didn't gross me out back then and I think I remember it as being pretty good!

So much that the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee has been asking about you and wondering if they should create a damper Emoji. ?

No tongue, ok.
What about blood sausage then?
In Estonia, verivorst (blood sausage) is made of pig's blood, barley groats, pork, marjoram and other flavourings. It is sold and eaten mostly in winter, being a traditional Christmas food.
