Retired, work is a four letter word.
I will stick with Ethel, or high test, or whatever they call the good stuff these days. The extra cost isn't much of a problem as I don't do a ton of driving. My motorhome on the other hand will be gathering dust for the duration, as it would cost me $440 for a full tank of fuel.

I ran several tanks of everything and tracked the mileage. 87, E15 88, 89, 93. Got the worst mpg with 87. E15 and 89 got 1.5 mpg better than 87. No difference with 93. Stock tune. E15 is 20 cents less than 87 here so I run that when I can get it, otherwise 89 since the mpg is a little better than 87 the extra cost is a wash.

So without ethanol, these engines run more efficiently because they don't like ethanol. I found this in my old f150 3.5 eco and my wife's 3.5 eco explorer sport. I averaged 2 more mpgs per gallon on that engine without ethanol (89 v 89). I am using 93 ethanol free right now and I'm averaging almost 24 mpg (combined w equal city and highway) in a tremor that I got a little over 19 mpgs on 87 blended originally. So gas here is $4.19 a gallon for regular and $4.89 a gallon for ethanol free 93. That equates to 22 cents a mile for 87 and 20 cents a mile for high octane ethanol free. So in fact I spend less. So when calculating don't look at the price to fill your tank, look at the price per mile. Total cost/miles driven. 87 $75.42/342 miles v 93 efree $88.02/432.

EcoBoost engines love ethanol, it's just not as energy dense as ethanol free. E10 is only about 3% less energy dense than clear gas.

There's a pretty extensive report on the 3.5l in the F150 that shows the best fuel economy as in miles per dollar is on regular pump 87. Pretty much every other controlled fuel economy test reveals the same thing. The extra cost of premium is never offset by any economy improvements. I know there's plenty of anecdotes that say otherwise though.

I went to the 87-89 tune for winter an looks like I'll be staying with it.

same here, with the 93 tune from tori , i would of totaled the truck in the snow and Ice

In AZ we get 10% ethanol because it supposedly provides cleaner air. But, you get less miles per gal. which means that you burn more gas per mile. Go Figure that out. ? I am not a street racer so 87 works just fine.
Way back in the day my boss had a 58 Chev station wagon with a power pack wedge hog engine. He only used regular gas where ethel was recommended. He said I just drive it so you cant hear the ping. When I drove it pinged like crazy. LOL

Always ran 87, always will.

I owned a turbo vehicle that required 91 last time gas got crazy expensive... told myself never again lol.

Wouldn't of bought the ranger if it didn't run on 87.

I run 91 and probably always will. I have the Ford Performance tune, so its required. I could pull the tune off, but... It only adds a couple bucks per tank. Although, I filled up in Beaver Creek last week and only put in enough gallons to get home.

Only if the higher grade has less ethanol.

i honestly never feel much difference in the old ranger. the new one seems happier on high test. my 16 mustang ran so blah on anything less than 93. felt like it was dragging an extra few thousand pounds around.

ok so here is one of those questions that will make me look stupid- er. i know the difference in octane in the grades of fuel but, how does octane relate to price? i guess what i am thinking is the same amount of effort goes into making 87 91 93 right ? im sure its not like the old separation tower things anymore is it ? it used to be high test stuff was top of the tower, then the lower you got towards diesel etc. until sludge and crude. im trying to get my mind around the jump in cost for a gallon of one vs. the other. esp when diesel was always cheaper until recent time. now diesel is clown shoes. it used to be treated like a by product of unleaded.

A few years old, but it's still relevant: LINK
