at least the new transmission is working well. sucks about the cost. i would have expected more miles out of the old one.

Man I love this Line and Attitude! I've acquired SO many great vehicles over the years on account of folks thinkin like this.I then got the Ranger shortly after, worried something else would break on my old vehicle…
And I’ve also been the unfortunate sucker to buy a vehicle that had head gasket sealer, a trans held together with stop slip, a bad hybrid battery, and Jerry rigged electrical systems which all decided to fail within a 6 month period.Man I love this Line and Attitude! I don’t think people are racking up the mileage like some of us do. My Ranger is a tow and fun vehicle and I’m on track to hit 60k well before the 3 year bumper to bumper ends…some of us that are doing 150-200k in 5-7 years may see failures earlier…doesn’t help if you commute to a neighboring state for work…People are still thinking the Ranger transmission is flawed, yet it's been in use since 2013.
How many millions of vehicles out there have this 'flawed' transmission?
Oh yes a person has to take each 'burning experience" (see what i did there..) and learn from it. One has to make a hobby out of learning what to look for in a used veh and what to stay away from. Its fun to me.And I’ve also been the unfortunate sucker to buy a vehicle that had head gasket sealer, a trans held together with stop slip, a bad hybrid battery, and Jerry rigged electrical systems which all decided to fail within a 6 month period.
Tell that to the person who just rebuilt a traction battery or trans thru the dealer (big $$$) only to find coolant in the exhaust very shortly after…very easy to have happen on the newer Toyotas and other modern complex vehicles…
Basically very easy to spend $10k+ on something and have another major system fail.
I’m with the OP, if the original trans failed at 95k with his “Easy” driving style and slightly larger tires, makes me question the longevity.
And yes, doing a search shows many failures on F-150 forum <100k with either towing, lift kits/bigger tires, or even some stock units (probably driven hard).
If I had to make a stab at an armchair diagnosis, it seems like it was having issues with fluid pressure or volume. Delayed engagement into reverse can be when you've shifted, but there's not enough pressure/volume to fill the torque converter/clutch to transfer power. The intermittent failure sounds like the pressure control valve was degrading leading up to the hard shifts, then eventual complete failure. Would be interesting to see the CAN data from that time to see what the pressures were doing, there's a good chance there was nothing visually broken for the tech to see in the pan.Just so everyone understands...my transmission was butter smooth up till 95K...the first sign started with an unexpected but benign delay engagement into reverse...it happened once a week...then every other day...then one day, it shifted HARD into second...then it shifted hard into 3rd...then it started to down shift hard...then it shifted normally...no it will not fix itself...something was on it's way out and fluid/filter change didn't help...then one day, its not shifting at all and getting hung up in high gear while stopped...if you're experiencing any rough shifting, get it looked at now before it tears itself apart...it will not fix itself...
Thank you for sharing your feedback on our transmission tuning, glad to hear you've been enjoying the shifting improvements! We've have also released updated 91-93 and E30 performance tunes late 2022. So if you haven't updated in a while you may have newer tunes ready to download and can always send a tune request to make sure you have the latest tunes..All I can say is after I got the Livernois Tow Tune i never had any real problems for the transmission shifting. Of anything I still understood that the 10R80 is a whole different animal
I used a similar method before my tune.As a habit, I drive in S while in stop and go...not generally gunning it but it makes driving more light footed and less laborious...when I'm on the highway cruising, I'll switch to D to maximize MPG...unless it's hilly then I'll hit the tow button...
How hard is it to install that tune? Is it pricey?I used a similar method before my tune.
Mixed driving, tow/haul, this is where I usually started out. In town, S. And cruising midspeed highways, 60 ish, D to get up into 10th. Locking out gears seemed like such a pain.
Since getting my Unleashed tune there's no need for that. I've got a couple of tweaks I want Torrie to make upon revision but it's basically the way the transmission should've been tuned from the factory.
Do you guys have a tune for using 87 and all around driving? Not necessarily tow or performance specific. Never have considered a tune until now. Don’t know much about them.Thank you for sharing your feedback on our transmission tuning, glad to hear you've been enjoying the shifting improvements! Locking out is super easy...just push down button...once takes out 10th, twice 9th, three times 8th, etc...unlock is reverse procedureI used a similar method before my tune.

Hey my transmission did something similar at 1300 miles. They had to replace the valve body which I guess also has all of the solenoids. Anyway since then, it’s been smooth like butter except the normal laggy shift into fourth the first time (or two) it does when it’s cold.Well, I hate to report this but Msfitoy has found it's Achilles Heal. The 10R80 has failed. With less than 1,000 miles before reaching her 100K milestone, the conditions has deteriorated to a very unreliable state that forced her to be parked until her service appointment. Which, to add insult to injury, was placed over a month ago and it's still 10 days away!!! I'm hoping there's a reasonable solution to her repair(s) which doesn't involve thousand dollar bills! Shift solenoids? Shift valve body replacement? Rebuild transmission? New transmission? Who knows. I'm just hoping to have her back to normal so we can cross that 100K mile together. She still looks brand new
Here's my write up to hand over to the service department so they don't have to hear the disappointment in my voice:
2019 FORD RANGER
TRANSMISSION FAILURE REPORT:
VIN:XXXXXXXXXXXXX
Transmission operation normal up till 95,000 miles, Spring 2022. Transmission currently miss-shifts in all modes, Drive, D+tow mode, S-mode auto, and S-mode manual.
1st incident: 95,000 mile. Driving away from home one day, transmission shifted from 1st to 2nd with 2 second delay and concluding with violent engagement. 2nd incident: This behavior was mitigated by lifting throttle in between 1-2nd. 7 quarts of old transmission fluid was extracted, new filter installed and 7 new quarts was added. Behavior did not immediately improve. After few thousand miles, the shifting improved and began operating mostly normal with slight miss shifts from 3rd -4th. 3rd incident: While accelerating to highway speeds, the transmission attempted to shift from 9th to 10th but began hunting between 7th and 10th causing an error code P0766 (wrench icon on), “shift solenoid “D” performance or stuck off”. I pulled off the highway and the transmission was stuck in 5th and there was evidence of transmission fluid expelled from unknown point. The fluid sprayed back and covered the drive shaft, frame, rear diff and muffler assembly. After shutting off and waiting a few minutes to restart, the transmission was operating as before and was driven home slowly. Limp mode did not come on. 4th incident: Fluid was checked and was still within specification. After cleaning the fluid from under body, the leak has not occurred since but the shifting behavior continued to worsen. Shifts from 1st to 2nd had changed from a jolt to a shudder. 5th incident: Shifts from 3rd to 4th developed a long delay and drops to 2nd before either re-engaging 4th with either a complete miss (lift throttle to re-engage), slip (rev goes up but engages) or a violent jolt/slam engagement. This causes the wrench icon to come on with instructions to “see manual”. The transmission began to stay in 4th and not shift up or down. After placing in park, noise can be heard from solenoids shifting into 1st. It also will become stuck in 7th even coming to a stop.
The transmission's current state has deteriorated to a point where it is not possible to drive the vehicle for more than a few miles before becoming stuck in high gear. Shutting off the vehicle can sometimes correct the gear position but not always.
