I believe the adaptive learning is to compensate for internal wear, not just driving habits. If I pull the battery on most modern automatics the only thing I notice different is the shift points change. But as far as apply and release speed and shift firmness, that definitely seems to change over the life of a transmission. On a high >150k mileage unit pulling the battery results in a long shift into Reverse the first time until the control module learns the internal wear. At least from what I’ve seen.

Glad they got it done for you. Now your next step needs to be 200k and beyond. I’m sure you’ll get there. Many more adventures with the truck.
For real...lots of miles to go...

Sounds like you're driving in D mode...try S or D + tow...or lock out higher gears that you don't want to be in...
Yeah I just started experimenting with that today. So far I’ve just been in D and occasionally Sport to test it out. I’ve always been a fairly conservative driver so sport seems excessive for my driving habits. Locking out gears today definitely kept rpm’s where they should be and no low rpm vibrations. Now to figure out how to incorporate this into my daily driving.

Sport winds out the engine too much IMO and seems too aggressive. My preference is Tow/Haul for tighter and firmer transmission shifting.

It might when you get a little more seat time in it. You're probably just so glad it ran smooth and didn't noting any weird shifting just yet. Now tomorrow you need to go on one of your 2 hour lunch runs. That'll be the tell tail sign. ?
Whoa...big difference between 3 hour grocery run and 2 hour lunch....I'd loose my job on the latter ?

As a habit, I drive in S while in stop and go...not generally gunning it but it makes driving more light footed and less laborious...when I'm on the highway cruising, I'll switch to D to maximize MPG...unless it's hilly then I'll hit the tow button...

So here's the math break down...the cost of a brand new 10R80 with 3 year unlimited mile warranty is $3,000...$2,700 additional for labor/fluids/programming....anyone know what the hourly rate for dealership these days? How many hours would that be?
I believe my local Ford dealer has a $150 or $175 per hour non-warranty labor rate. At least that's what I recall. A transmission removal/replacement along with line flush and programing should be 8hrs or less of shop time.

That would make it roughly 15-18 hours for the replacement labor...

Tough to know as only a percentage of the $2700 is labor.

Most all shops use estimating software that tells them how many hours to quote a job, then they add supplies and consumables on top of that.

The Ranger may be more complicated. Only reference I have for time is a 2013 F150 4x4. It went in for warranty to replace engine rear main seal at 10k miles. That required the transmission to come out. Dropped it off at 7:30 am and they called me at 4:30pm that day telling me it was ready.

They must've been busy...it too over a month to schedule my appointment then my truck was with them about a week and a half...

Appreciate the advice. I’ll definitely try this. Anything over 40 and the truck runs just like it should. Below 40 it’s a bit different than I’m used to so I’ll try to use sport mode more. I have a few hills on my commute to work which leave the engine lagging because I’m in a high gear so I’ll try tow and sport in those situations.

I bet the tech working on yours was getting pulled off to other work if they actually had it in a shop bay for all that time.

The dealership I worked at tried not to overschedule their techs. They knew their staff level an didn't take on work they couldn't start right away. The problem was once the tech figured out the problem was they had to find the parts to fix it.

They told me what needed to be done and how much it would cost about two hours after dropping my truck off...probably because of my description (page 1 of this thread)...ya it's toast...

The last transmission shop I dealt with hooked up a device to my vehicle that could tell that the line pressures were maxed out and internal clutches were worn. Even then, they said at 160k “something’s bound to be worn out” if it was mostly city driving. I told them to just replace it instead of diagnosing further, so in most cases it’s just cheaper to focus on getting the new unit installed vs a tear down.

I then got the Ranger shortly after, worried something else would break on my old vehicle…

The only thing I wish it had were a better factory trans tune. Everything else is secondary!
