Yea there's nothing much on the bill other than what they replaced/serviced...I'm asking my rep for some explanation from the tech...we'll see...I did go ahead and had the coolant and brakes flushed...

I'd be nice if they could give you a breakdown of what happened and why. Yeah I know it's asking a lot but tell him inquiring minds on R5G wanna know. Otherwise we're all coming to see him personally. :captain:

I'm sure they'd be more than happy to tear it down and report back...

Let me give you the short story...Ford's tranny isn't designed to last...trade yours in before 95K...you've been warned....

With the amount of miles I drive, I'll more than likely be 6' under before I hit 95K. ?

We will probably never know why it failed. The shop that did the work just swaps in a new one and MAYBE sends the bad one to Ford for analysis. Or it will just send it off to a third party for rebuild.
Twenty something years ago I knew a guy that was the transmission tech at Ford. He said he could swap out 5 - 7 transmissions a day. Of course, things were a lot easier back then.

I think the 10R80 can last, but the tuning leaves a bit to be desired. I’m the last one to complain if it gets into the highest gear, or doesn’t pick the right gear, my concern is it consistently “flares” 200-300RPM while trying to accelerate uphill even with cruise on. The coast down hesitation, combined with flare when re-engaging the internal clutch packs is what I guess most are calling the “jerky” and “lurchy” behavior.

FWIW both the last gen 6R80 and 6L80E can produce lightning fast shifts when programmed that way, why Ford didn’t do this from the factory makes little sense.

My GMC 6.2L/6L80E shifts 2-3x faster than this 10R80 and doesn’t need to be messed with when Cruise is on…it just works…never fails to get into highest gear unlike the Ranger which will do a 9/10/9 dance and then eventually settle on 9 at 55…

Just so everyone understands...my transmission was butter smooth up till 95K...the first sign started with an unexpected but benign delay engagement into reverse...it happened once a week...then every other day...then one day, it shifted HARD into second...then it shifted hard into 3rd...then it started to down shift hard...then it shifted normally...no it will not fix itself...something was on it's way out and fluid/filter change didn't help...then one day, its not shifting at all and getting hung up in high gear while stopped...if you're experiencing any rough shifting, get it looked at now before it tears itself apart...it will not fix itself...

I was told by a transmission shop that when the hard shifts start happening all the time the internal clutch plates are at maximum tolerable wear and the unit is shifting hard to get you to a safe place to pull over.

My experience with the last generation is 160k is all you’ll get if you do a lot of city driving, or commuting where there’s a lot of stop-and-go traffic.

Hopefully the later year 10 speeds will fare better, but my feeling is with the way these are tuned along with the push for fuel economy, they will fail before 200k easily.

Still haven’t figured out why mine tries to get into 10th gear going uphill at 55 while rolling through country roads with Cruise on. It consistently fails and flares back into 9th…

Yeah I’m almost wondering if a good third party tune (other than voiding some warranty) would make the transmission last a bit longer.
