What does Ford wanting to rebuild it have to do with Sid's situation. If he wants to put a reused one in it’s his call not Fords this isn't a warranty issue.
I didn’t see anyone say it’s a warranty issue. If they did they are delusional, he has 98k miles.

I have a 20yr 200k powertrain warranty on mine that I pray I’ll never have to use.

I hate to be the pioneer in a transmission sticker shock awareness PSA but y'all gonna face this if you keep your Ranger long enough...I've received offers from law firms to represent me in lemon law suit but haven't called them back due the fact that I don't believe I fall into that category...although I believe that any transmission failing through normal use (light in my case) after 90K is just not reasonable to a any consumer...an engine that needed a rebuild at 90K would be considered ridiculous...

Well if the 10R has a class action lawsuit eventually, millions of people will be impacted. I hope yours is a fluke considering GM and Ford dumped millions into these transmissions.

What does Ford wants have to do with it? He has 95K miles on it. It's his dime not theirs.
You would be suprised at what some manufacturers will do even when it's on the customers dime. As silly as it soumds it is the unfortunate truth.

Honestly I think it comes down to the lack of servicing. One thing I have seen with the old automatics is you had to service them regularly or they would fail. Better yet if you did not service them and then you serviced it with a bunch of miles you were most likely walking afterwards.

That said i do understand that Ford says to service the transmission every 150K. I say it should be every 30K with a simple Drain and fill for a few quarts. Nissan recommends that interval for both Manual and Automatic Transmissions. And if you followed it you had a extremely low chance of the transmission failing(with the exception of a cooler rupturing like the early D40 Frontier, R51 Pathfinder and N50 Xterra....... Common with the first few years.....). Part of why i wish the Ranger had an actual dipstick and drain plug

Holy crap that nextgen website wants $15k for a fully built transmission! Just do a 7 speed bronco swap for that price.... Not to derail tge thread just spent 30 minutes ogling at their website.
Yes, but it handles a 750 hp engine. That’s more in the mustang/Raptor world. They have one that does insane HP but huge money too

I'm very curious what the dealer says or if they bother to put in the time to do diagnostics at all. My guess is they'll just jump straight to trans replace. Sounds like it's valve body related, but one wonders what else a stuck valve may have hurt. I would guess there's either software or hardware safety's that prevent it from damaging itself, but the fluid on the outside would worry me. Hard to tell without a proper teardown of the transmission, but my guess is we'll never get that much out of the dealer.

I'm not sure if more frequent fluid changes would have helped in this case. Internal wear should be highest when it's new and taper off during early mileage. You shouldn't see significant wear again until end of life, which by design is usually over 150k or 200k miles. Harder use will wear things quicker, but it's not like he's towing at max capacity all the time.

Gotta say this does not make me feel good about mine and it's perpetually clunky shift habits. I would have no problem swapping in a junkyard replacement transmission if it came to that, but I don't think the average Joe has access to the software needed to reprogram the computer part anymore..

wear happens more without fresh fluid too. I always practice the 30k drain and fill. Pain in the butt but my last trans lasted 260k. Heat is also a killer regardless what mercon V ULV can handle. Im doing an aluminum transmission pan at first drain next month. Just saying we can all use this as an example of how the manual is not always best practice.

@Frenchy said that "Ford would want it rebuilt."

We just can't see it because he's blocked us. Anytime you see holes in a thread like that it's a good assumption that somebody has blocked you. If you'd like to catch up, log out. Then you can see what the idiots said.

I do agree with you no modern transmission should fail this fast. I know you've taken very good care of your Ranger so it's definitely not from abuse. Is this a common problem for this transmission along the other vehicles that it's in? I know it's been used for years in many other vehicles so if it is then I can see the lawsuit. If not they'll just say it's a fluke thing like the HVAC heater boxes and call it a day. Not trying to be a downer here but I hate lawyers and 99.9% are out for THEIR well being ($$$) not yours.

I could of swore you liked to give your truck a whippin lol. Everyone I know who's done the tail of the dragon is pretty hard on their toys ?

That being said.. a guy I know is a supervisor for a public works garage.. and says they have a few 200k+ 10r80s that havnt even been serviced. I'm thinking you just got unlucky. Manufacturers figured out how to make make quarter million mile autos awhile ago. If you baby your truck there's no reason not to expect that figure.

It's hard to speculate what the issue could be without being a 10R80 expert but hopefully it's something small that can be easily serviced. One of the reasons I bought my Ranger was the logic that the 10R80 could handle anything and more than the 2.3 could throw at it. I've towed extensively at max capacity often times at WOT... so this has me a little bit worried!
