Maybe for the extended cab. I'm 5 ft 11 in and had no problems in the back of the crew cab. As for how long the D40 was out, yeah it was for a while. Started in 2005 model year, and if not mistaken 2021 was the last year. Body wise I like it better than the new one. And as long as you preformed the regular maintenance(wich no one does) the thing was a reliable machine!! The only two things I did not like with the 2016 i had was the turning radius(made the joke constantly about a tractor trailer dojng better) and the MPG a little. Mind you this was taken care of when I got into the Ranger. That said it was an easy truck to work on.
I had an '06 NISMO. Back seat, IMHO, was a joke. My dog barely had enough room back there.

As to "reliable machine," it was hands down the biggest POS I have ever owned. And I maintain vehicles. Very anal and at times a bit too vocal (per my boss lady) about needed proper maintenance for vehicles. My Frontier cost me more money in repairs, not maintenance, repairs then all the other vehicles I've ever owned... combined. Fact. Not a joke. Not an exaggeration. Still have my Frontier spreadsheet for the maintenance and repairs. Refuse to delete it. It was so horrendous I guess I just keep it as evidence of how bad a vehicle can be.

Side note, got to where I'd contact nissan (doesn't deserve to be capitalized) corporate regularly when yet something else broke. All I ever received in reply was a canned response. Except one time. During one such communication I offered to visit one of their executives, then take my truck and do something that the executive "believed to be anatomically impossible." But I assured them that I'd make it fit. For that email I actually received a direct response. Some woman emailed me back to let me know that the "proper authorities have been notified."?:like::clap: Yea, my reply back went total redneck.

Big nissan fan here.

I was just looking for a new car in general. Had a leased Focus and it was up, so went in to test drive a couple of cars. Drove my truck first and was in love. Then drove a 2020 Escape SEL and hated every second of it. The road noise was loud like there was no sound proofing anywhere, the seats were uncomfortable, which seems standard with the Escapes that have the heated seats, and the ASS was the most hesitant I had ever experienced. Only redeeming quality was that it had some pep to it. Accidentally got up to 95 when I first got on the highway without realizing it. Came back a week later and bought my truck.

So I guess I never really even thought about a Tacoma. Drove past a Toyota dealership on the way to the Ford one, though. Does that count?

Seriously.

I read all the articles on the Ranger/Chevy/Toyota, looked at many hrs of utube, spec ....
Went out & tried the Ranger, really wanted to test drive the others but just bought the Ranger.
Maybe I made an error, wait.... no, did not.

Yeah, it sounds like your "dual cab" is what we call a "crew cab" (or sometimes a "super crew" or SCREW), whereas your "extra cab" is what we call a "super cab" or SCAB.
Yeh and where you have the Lariat and tremor, we have the Wildtrak and Raptor.

I was looking at all the mid-size trucks.

The tacoma has a huge aftermarket cult following. The gm twins were meh, they had the diesel motor. Frontier was just to new back in the market with not much aftermarket support.

It was really between the twins and Ford.

And to be honest, I don't like the way the ranger looks. But it's payload and towing capacity were far enough above the twins, I went for it.

The interior of the ranger is out dated, the infotainment is old, the front end looks like they over inflated a Ford taurus.

But functionally it meets all my needs better than the others. There is a bunch of aftermarket support for motor mods because of the rs tuners. The offroad segment has support because the platform hasn't changed in 4 years. And in those 4 years, it has given Ford a chance to identify shortcomings that should be corrected. Like removing those hood struts and not having a tailgate damper.

Overall, I wish I could have gotten the new body style, but I'm not willing to buy a first year of anything AND I couldn't wait 18 more months for a new vehicle. (I buy a vehicle and keep it until it isn't economical to keep it >10 years in my experience). I'll keep the ranger until the wheels fall off or someone offers me stupid money for it.

Also, I didn't want to be one of those tAcO bRoS. They are almost as dumb as the jEePeR bRoS.

If you take a look Nissan never really had much aftermarket support like Toyota and Jeep. Why you ask? Well when peiple talk about OffRoad they think Toyota and Jeep because they break things the most out there!! Lol

I picked the Ranger solely on the drivetrain. I have test drove several different Tacomas with the V6 drivetrain. They are THE worst accelerating vehicle i have ever driven there is not one ounce of get up and go. They may run forever but man you are not getting to forever in a hurry. haha.

I prefer Taco Salad... Vs. a Taco....
Is that the answer everyone is looking for?
All the reasons above and them some until there is a 300 HP Hybrid... Then first to the block wins IMO.

My 2nd gen Tacoma (4.0 V6, 212k miles) was a great truck but on its last legs (and third bottle of liquid head gasket repair) when I drove it to my friendly Ford dealer to test drive the Ranger. I was prepared to provide full disclosure when the service department took my truck in for inspection, but they never asked. Instead they made me a generous trade-in offer (which I accepted), drove my new Ranger home, and lived happily ever after.

I didn't as I never thought about or considered a Tacoma.

I made the mistake of buying a ranger. I recently resolved that issue. What a pile. I really can't say much good about it except it was cheap and got half decent fuel mileage. Grew to hate driving it, especially in winter. I was in the dealership about every 2 months with a different warranty issue. The customer service was excellent, but a bought new because I needed reliability, which this truck was not. So it was time to move on, and am happy I did.Cheers!
