In the past for auto transmissions, I've seen a harsh gear engagement into D or R be a fluid volume issue. A shift is commanded, there isnt enough fluid volume/flow to make things move fast enough, so the computer boosts the line pressure to the moon to compensate. When things do get moving inside the transmission, now you've got a ton of pressure hitting the clutch and whomp, you get a hard engagement.

Why it does that on your truck could be several different things, from the control valve to the programming, but its most likely not harmful to the transmission. Unfortunately, Ford's calibrations for powertrain are weak compared to the competition and in my opinion, they can't do a good program for the 10R80E. (Which Chevy seems to have no issues with)

Aftermarket tune could very well help that (I'm also running the Livernoise soft shift 91-93) but you could start with a cheaper alternative. Buy the USB dongle and download Forscan, and do a reset of the powertrain module and clear out the transmission adaptive tables. Be sure to follow the service procedure to relearn the adaptive values. Trans at operating temp, slow acceleration up and down through the gears, it does make a difference.
Thank you for your reply. I'll have Ford change the trans fluid while they are checking for the TSB stuff. I wish our trucks had a dam trans dip stick

Hi Mark...mine's recently also started a new routine for the first few miles when starting out...shifts fine from 1st to second then when it hits 3rd, it feels like it went into neutral for a second throwing me forward, same to 4th...bizarre ...after warm up it stops doing that...what a freaking weird tranny....
Hey Sid.....so when I get this bump, maybe in 4th or 5th, sometimes it feels like someone came up and rear ended me.....very pronounced. Now it does not happen very often but when it does it is not nice. Since it happens so infrequently and I have the tune installed, I figured it was just a burp in the programming. I don't believe you have a tune installed so I'm very interested in where this comes from and can a update to the stock programming be appropriate....
Has your dealer offered any programming update? Just curious......

Into second… My truck constantly skips second and shifts from first right into third. Not very smoothly compared to other shifts.
So I checked maybe I have 9 speed truck. Nope. Second gear exists but on drive it’s never on use. Dealer case or normal?
Edit: 10 000km on it, 3 months
That is normal shift protocol 1-3-4-5-6(sometimes)7-8-9-10. 2 is used in Trailer tow, Sport Mode and most 4WD situations.

Depending on acceleration I'll typically get either 1-3-5 or 1-2-4. To the OP: this has come up a lot and the bottom line is that there's no reason for the truck to use all the gears in order if it doesn't need to, just because they are there; it'll use them when it needs to. I did the same thing manually when I drove a manual (not as often and not the same gears, but I also didn't have 10 to choose from). If you drive slow with a load you'll see a lot more use of 2-3-4-5.

My engine's stock...your description is spot on...feels like someone bumped into me...very annoying...then the hesitation going into 3rd and 4th feels like missing a step going walking down stairs...whooooaaaa...

im pretty sure they do, its just in a terrible location.

Havent had this hard shift to D in any of my 10spds yet, but the lightning does, but that i always assumed due to the power it has.

I really dont see it as a bad thing as long as it is shifting ok, and isnt making a clunking noise. Guess im used to bikes jerking when you tap down into first.

Guys,

Just wanted to touch base on the TSB update topic for anyone running our Mycal tuning device on their trucks since we've been getting a lot of calls on this topic lately. Any time your truck goes into the dealer please be sure you are checking the ECU Strategy / SW ID codes shown on your Module Info menu when connected to the truck to confirm if your stock cal was updated before attempting to do any programming. Even for general service visits there's a chance they could update your truck.

Often times if Ford has done a TSB update or flash of any kind that impacts the engine or transmission, there is a strong chance they have changed your stock strategy to something newer. Then we would need to blank the tuner and send new tunes built to match that updated calibration. If that is the case just send a new tune request over with the updated stock codes mentioning the truck went in for service so we can blank the tuner and have you save the new factory tune from the truck before attempting to program.

Yep, think 10-spd bicycle: you have your favorite 4 or 5 gear combos,, and the rest are only used in special situations.

Hey friends - so recently I noticed that when I put my truck into Drive, the truck jumps forward in a jerky manner. I didn't do that before and I know I have seen others post similar issues. I had Ford change my trans oil, and there is no way for me to check the level.

Does anyone have more information on how I can resolve this issue? I'm past the 3yr warranty, although I think the drivetrain may be 5yr.

Thank you!
Ensure you are letting the engine settle after startup before moving the shifter. 10-15 seconds

Ok, so the jerky tyranny thing isn't just Ranger specific, in my experience anyway. My wife's Mazda is like that if you don't let the car sit and warm up for a couple of minutes, at least when it gets a little cold. Perhaps that isn't your issue though. I remote start my Ranger about 5 minutes before I leave wherever I am and I haven't experienced anything rough, not yet anyway. I will say that it doesn't shift as smooth as when it's warm but again, that's my experience with other cars too. I try to avoid any hard acceleration when first starting out. Try to keep it nice and smooth and easy. And as far as shift sequence, mine usually goes 1-3-5-6-7 but interestingly I've seen it do 1-2-4-5...when it's not warmed up. I have about 1300 miles on it now and it has smoothed out a LOT compared to when it was brand new. I kind of expected that but this is definitely new to me since my last Ranger that I drove for 23 years was a manual. I just learned about a week ago that you can lock out higher gears when it's in regular drive mode. But sport mode is really fun, the shifts are instantaneous and I've chirped the tires more than once accelerating in sport mode with traction control off. And that is freaking cool!

I was quoted +- $400...so I decided that worth saving while learning something new...

It's a good idea to have your foot firmly on the brake when going from Park into Drive or Reverse. Mine will do a short "leap" if I don't. If I do, it slushes into gear smoothly.
