I've been in law enforcement for close to 15 years now, and I've seen it all when it comes to auto thefts/burgs. I've never heard of them stealing intakes, much less putting a rag anywhere lol..

I was watching a documentary once on a Beverly Hills cop. Apparently a detective was able to successfully halt someones vehicle with a banana shoved in the muffler tip.

There is a c-clip on the actuator rod ends. One visible from passenger side wheel well. Could be what they were referring to?

if they forgot that clip they are idiots or on drugs or of course both.

They told me it was the bolt holding on the turbine.

so ignorance on my part here - but i cant imagine a rag blastin through the turbo would do so much damage to the turbo. Of course its not good for it lol but im thinking the turbo is pretty hot and a lot of velocity going on and blades turning. would the rag not get shredded and toasty and spat out into the other important parts making more problems after the turbo ?

there is a locknut on the turbine shaft, usually left hand threaded - if that came loose bye-bye turbo . That would be a factory defect as the dealer installer tech would have no reason to mess with it.

I thought the same, when I went to go actually see that there was a rag in the turbo. It was shredded but I didn’t notice any visible damage on the turbo itself I was like can’t you guys just clean it out and call it a day? To which they responded they didn’t want to risk it causing more harm to the engine. Fast forward 2 months the turbo failed due to them not properly installing it??‍♂

Rag got sucked in on the cold side. At 10’s of thousands of rpms the aluminum cold wheel gets beat to hell and will disintegrate. It knocks everything out of balance and a downhill spiral from there. The same could happen on the hot side but less likely.

Yeah , no such thing. @dtech is correct about the nut that holds the cold wheel on the turbine shaft. Being left handed it would be self tightening as turbo rotates. Usually something else will cause the nut to come off and it’s usually postmortem after turbo has already detonated. I think the dealer is not helping with the description they’re giving. But it’s fixed for free and that’s what matters.

Here’s a good cutaway of what the internal’s of our turbos look like. The nut for the cold wheel is on the left and the turbine shaft and wheel are one piece with the wheel part being on the left. There’s no bolt or cotter pin internally as you can see. Just a good visual reference

Hmmm...account made in June, no action , as were some others , and now some noise, could it be he who's name cannot be spoken ? ?
Thread seams "slippery " and maybe we shouldn't "fall" for it , we might get "bruised " it does sound like a "bunch" of crap , how "green" are we here ? ?

Edit: (one more )

Maybe the OP should "peel" of his mask so we can see who it really is !
I’ll leave it at this ?

Just got off the phone with them that was the case, factory defect not the other dealerships fault.

did they install a new turbo or was the replacement a rebuilt ? I would think it rare for a completely new turbo to have a loose locknut, but might be more likely with a rebuilt. I believe most auto warranties allow for use of rebuilt parts.

Ok, once again I’m glad they covered it under warranty and you have your truck back. But…
A. 23K on a new turbo
B. It was a non existent cotter pin they left out
C. It was a non existent bolt that held the turbine
D. It was the left handed threaded nut that self tightens as it rotates ( with 23K on it).

Me thinks the dealer has no clue as to what happened. And they are throwing another turbo at it. The bad part of that is without knowing what actually caused the failure did they leave the door open for another failure.
IF it was the nut for the cold wheel then definitely something else is the cause. IMHO based on handling turbo repairs for a decade or two.
