Is it unfortunate that this happened? Yes it is. Is Ford at least trying to help in some way? Absolutely!! Do you have a right to be frustrated? I think so. Having a major problem right at that time I would be too.
With all that said I suggest going ahead and doing the repair without much complaint. You will have a 2 year unlimited warranty on the Torque Converter once the repair is done. Also something to consider is getting the Ford Extended warranty if you still want to keep the truck. Why you ask? Well its better to have that warranty and not need it vs need it and not have it like you already ran into. Just make sure Ford will let you get the extended warranty still
