Hi Mark,

The Ford jack is certainly a Piece of Work.... Old Ranger was a bottle jack style...also POS. What most folks do not know is the OEM jack has a life cycle requirement of 8 cycles ( Up and down is one cycle...) They usually will last a bit longer but not a very robust part to last a lifetime. So if you use the OEM jack to rotate your tires...You use over half of the life of the jack just to accomplish tire rotation... I always found that weird.

Best,
Phil
wow I never knew the oem jacks had such a short life span! Scary actually, a wimpy jack can cost a life. im assuming it had warning labels on it and was also explained in the manual? my 05 had what i thought was factory jack, scissor style and came with a black stubby tire iron, lug wrench combo and the part that goes to the tire lift to crank up and down. all replaced now esp the jack.

ive seen some aluminum floor floor jacks that are stout enough for rangers and not so heavy. sure would be a blessing when we needed it. i bet the tire lift would strain with it. im guessing it may weigh 40 pounds. so its like adding a tires weight to the equation. i wonder if it would fit inside the cab some place but secured and out of the way?
I have a HF 2 ton aluminum jack an it's light but struggles to get one tire off the ground when I use it to rotate tires. Had to use it in the back. I also have a 3.5 ton aluminum HF jack that handles it fine. They used to sell a craftsmen steel 2.5 mini floor jack in a plastic case for the road. One of those might be a good option if you have a place to stash it.

If I found myself in that situation on the trail I would just haul out my shovel and dig a small depression for the offending tire to drop into, getting it off the ground when jacked up. But yes, the scissor jack is junk, why I bought a Hi-Lift.
smart thinking! smarter not harder as they say. Ive used hi lift jacks in the past on farm tractors. do you have jack points for the hi lift on your ranger? if so share pics with us, its something i wanna do for the future. i was thinking of getting some real stout rock sliders that would work with the hi lift jack.

I have Shrockworks sliders on my truck, frame mounted so I can pretty much jack from anyplace along the slider.

Have you given it a practice run? I was curious if you’d see much flex. How did you choose to mount it?

I jacked up the truck from front and rear on both sides as a test, no flex I could see, worked great. I assume you mean mounting the jack, I only carry it while off roading saving the scissor jack for on road applications. I strap it to the bed headboard along with traction boards, 2 5 gallon gas cans, and a toolbox. As for the jack I have a leather pad to place between it and the slider to prevent marring the powder coat.

nice! i want a set of those also... I got a plan to paint them magnetic, to kinda match the wheels and sport package trim. I think it will look sharp.

I’m waiting on my white knuckle sliders, should be made and shipped in the next two weeks or so

then I’ll actually have a place to use my high lift.

you are gonna call someone to change your tire?

a "block" under the jack on the side of the road can make it safer. Soft shoulder or gravel will allow the jack to sink on an angle an the jack slide out. A 6" 2x6 will help spread the load out an keep it level.

The good news lost in all this is we have road side assistance for a while an I got it with my extended warranty for 7 years.

My Miata came from the factory with no spare, a small compressor, and a can of Fix-A-Flat.

I usually keep a can of FAF in my vehicles and if the puncture is in the tread I'll use it since it's very convenient. Always be sure to tell the tire shop that you put it in your tire.

Of course if the puncture is anywhere outside the tread area you're changing the tire out.

Often, the most important question is not who will change the tire, but where the tire will be changed. Imagine a road, winding through the woods, with no shoulder, and trees within a few feet of the pavement. Roadside assistance? You bet, especially in darkness or adverse weather conditions. I think it costs $11/year on my insurance policy.
