Ford Pass uses the data from the truck's computers. If the gauge shows 1/8 down, the so will Ford Pass.

They're have been threads about the dash and the pass not matching because of bad instrument clusters. Dealers replaced cluster, problem solved. That's what I was referencing - I was able to rule out bad instrument cluster since they matched.

When I picked up the truck, it was down an 1/8 of a tank. I mentioned it to sales guy and he gave me the choice of waiting for them to run to the gas station or a free ballcap. I'm a sucker for a ballcap. Tonight I went to fill up for the first time and when the pump clicked off, I gave it a few more squeezes. Got in truck and it's showing down an 1/8. Ford Pass matches so I don't think it's the trouble some have reported with that.

The only thing I can think of is that I was at Costco and they have the nozzles with the seal around them and that maybe caused the issue?

Anyone experience something like this? I searched threads and didn't see any posts about it.

EDIT - It was the Costco pump. Stopped at Mobil and it filled up no problem.
I have had similar problems with other vehicles when filling up at a pump that has the vapor recovery system (black nozzle). They sometimes interfere with the vehicle's own venting. They are also a pain when filling a motorcycle tank.
Every station in my region has the old school simple splash guard (red nozzle).

I had the opposite happen a couple weeks ago but with my mustang at a a gas station in West Virginia. Stupid pump did not auto-shut off and gas went shooting out and down the side of my car. It sucked too because, like the Ranger, it has no gas cap so the gas was literally full all the way up to the opening and had to drive and turn carefully trying not to spill too much out. It was so full of gas that I have never seen the "miles to empty" reading that high before, lol.

I've had that happen once before. I grabbed the windshield wash wand and tried to clean that area the best I could. Then once back home washed it and waxed it right away. Unless I'm traveling I only go to my local Sam's Club or Costco for gas and their pumps work fine.

RP you could always buy the damper and resell it. There was no claim to actually install it.
NEVER resell your damper...It's bad JuJu!:devil:

When I retired from Ford, one of my fuel system engineers was on a joint Car/Truck task force to understand premature shut off, with focus on the capless system... suppositorily the result was a system that worked on any and all gas station pumps.... Looks like that was not the case..that said, my Ranger and Lincoln Nautilus have no problems at my nearest Costco. That is why I recommended a check by the dealer as opposed to just finding another station with a different nozzle.

best,
Phil

It was either a Sheetz or Speedway. I was traveling back from Virginia Beach to Ohio. I run a flex fuel tune so I was limited in my choices for gas stations that carry E-85. I could have just picked a better station and just used 93 octane, but the E-85 is just so much more fun!

You're lucky I cant even find 93 out here, 91 is the highest.

I suspected the pump nozzle because I've found with my older VW when the seal on the pump nozzle at Costco is cracked badly enough, it behaved similarly. I looked at the nozzle last night but didn't see anything but I know that if those pumps have an issue with how they seal, they won't run correctly. Given that I was able to fill at another station will traditional style nozzles, I'm feeling pretty good about it not being a Ford issue but since I've got to take it back to get the front plate bracket, I'll still have them look at the vent tube anyway just to be sure. It's always great to have your professional insight on all these issues we find - Ford is still getting a pretty good return on investment from you!

This has happened to me, I want to say about 2 times, both at Costco (it's the only fuel I use other than truck stops on road trips). I figured it was a nozzle issue not necessarily a truck issue, even though both times it was the last 1/8 that wasn't filled.

That's what you get for trying to gas up at a top-tier gas station that sounds like it's a low tier gas station by its name, and you would not have had that problem if you had the tailgate damper pre-installed!
